well, I got a speeding ticket last night. Doing 80 in 55. Hope I can get reduction or dismissal from court. I say you can speed as much as you want as long as you're not reckless. ARGH! Not only that, but it was my gf's birthday last night too. Real good up until then.

It was on the capital beltway (495) that goes around Washington DC. Does anyone know if the speed limit is 55 or 65 around exit 22? I thought it was 65...

EDIT: no prior speeding tix...i was just careless and stupid as all you pointed out... oh well :p

EDIT: for those of you just joining in who don't read all the replies, I added this as one of my replies:
"ok, I guess it wasn't too obvious that I was joking on the "speed all you want" part... just ranting cuz I got one... I have every intention of paying all fines and such...I (and everyone else) just hate the points... "

stupidity at it's finest. 20 MPG over the posted speedlimit is reckless. you should have went to jail.

Splitting hairs are we? Either way you're sitting a minimum of 15 miles over the speed limit. I'd say the best you can hope for is a reduction in points. Do you have any other speeding tickets within the last 5 years?

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Where do you draw the line at being reckless? Who are you to judge what is or is not reckless. What is not reckless one at second may become very reckless the next. Speed limits, whether you agree with them or not, are there for a reason.

Why do people always ask how they can get out of a speeding ticket? If you speed, you better be ready to pay the fine. People need to start taking responsibility for their actions instead of trying to skirt the consequences.

Now, I have had speeding tickets, I am not saying that I never speed, but I have always paid them or went to traffic school, taking the consequences.

Just my $.02

So who defines it? Case by case? No, you need a law to handle it. Would 90 have been reckless? what about 100? Where was the line drawn? Oh, that's right it was drawn by the signpost saying 55 was the limit!

If you want to avoid points, try to go the traffic school route. I have done that twice. No points and it does not go on the record that the insurance company see, so no raise in your insurance.

Lighten up on him. It's not like 10 over is any less illegal than 20 or 30 over so please step off your pedestal. Unless you drive the speed limit exactly, you have no business being so harsh.

This is not to say that it's not dangerous or reckless to drive so fast but speeding is speeding, but if you get caught you're allowed to work within the system to reduce points or fines or whatever. If you don't like that he's wondering what his options are, keep it to yourself. You have the same opportunities, you just value your time differently. I wouldn't waste my time in court, but for someone else, it may be worth while.

whatever. I just don't think people need to be rude.

If you were a cop, would you give a ticket to someone going 25 MPH (that's 40km/h) over the limit? You probably would.

When the limit's 55, keep it under 70, and you'll probably get left alone, unless he sees that you're not wearing a seatbelt, or he sees lights from a radar detector, or something is wrong with your car, like a headlight out, or a loud muffler (ricer or ruster).

docmanhattan, thanks for the "defense" but no need for that. People can be rude if they want. I just choose to laugh or ignore their comments. In this case, i was called stupid at its finest, should be thrown in jail, a i love you, etc. Eh, that's their thoughts. I got a good laugh outta those. I mean, I get annoyed too when ppl are bad drivers and such. I was being one of those last night. Everyone's right that 25 is def. too much, but (believe me if u want or not) I really thought it was 65, so doing 15 over I didn't think was TOO bad... oh well

First of all, what you say doesn't count. The law is the law. Second, you may not think you're driving recklessly, but what if an animal crosses the road suddenly? Or another car? The speed limit is set the way it is for a reason; safety.

Try to bear that in mind the next time you're on the road. There was a car fatality thread I read here last night. The stories I read were rather sobering.

here comes the righteous ATers.

"i'm better than you cuz i only go 10mph over!"

What a joke.

Anyways, i speed(sometimes way too much) and i consider myself a good driver. I leave a huge distance(usually 10 car lengths) on the freeway. I dont pass on the right, i signal, i always watch my surronding, and i have never been in an accident.

Believe it or not, people can drive at 95mph safely. I have been in a few packs of cars doing that, with no problems. Driving becomes dangerous when you get an asshole who doesnt signal, who tailgates, who passes on the right, or drives without consideration for others.

i didn't say i was a better person because i only go 10mph over... in fact, that's a tip on how not to get a ticket if you want to drive fast...
it was a joke , but chewy could take it like a man.. i respect that...

get a radar detector if your going to drive fast. Eventhough it's illegal in VA. It's really hard not to speed on 495, 395, and 95 at night. NOt a lot of cars and 5 lane of HW

Yeah, because this comment doesn't make it sound like you think you're better than him:

<< i don't have any speeding tickets... hmmm oh yeah i know why, i only go 10 over and the cops ignore me.... >>

Then again, if that's how you would want to be treated if it happened to you, then I suppose that's fine.

It was funny when the UNMARKED cop said:

"Did you realize that you were going 80?"
"Nope."
"Well, you passed an SUV who was going the same speed I was because he saw I was a cop, so you should have seen me there too."

Now the thing is, you can't tell if a car is an unmarked car (at least I can't) without a radar (which I don't have). And what's annoying is that after he left, I (of course) drove slower, but still saw cars passing me going 80ish :) oh well

i know what the unmarked tail lights look like when it is dark out. :D i got one ticket three years ago in heavy traffic. 72 in a 55. been pulled over a couple other times but i was let go...one because i told the State Patrol officer i was going to school to be in law enforcement (which is true) and the other will be a story for another day.
