Anyone can use free fillable forms and upload electronically regardless of income. The only caveat is that any schedules you might need to file have to be in the fillable format. Most were last year. I suspect, but don't know, that even more are available this year.

We could put a quick end to that nonsense if everyone not eligible for free online filing went back to filing paper returns which has to be much more costly for the IRS. I don't think they should be allowed to charge anything more than the cost of a 1st class stamp to e-file especially since e-filing saves them money.

Edit: If Ironwing is correct then that is really all I would expect from them and have no issue with it.
