DarkBASIC thoughts & opinions

just google the words DARKBASIC!

i saw a magazine at a newstand yesterday that said "learn to program your own professional quality games with little or no experience" and well im not that naive but i bought it anyway and it comes with a full copy of DarkBASIC and 180+ tutorials... after fooling around with it for a bit i gotta say it looks friggin awesome!

sure its limited in that its a lot slower than C, C++ and stuff but it makes directx programming so much friendlier... i'm pretty excited to teach myself this!

just wondering anyone else use this or heard of this??

great stuff!

I played with it, but don't have time to really explore it.

It looks good, but you won't be making HL2 quality stuff with it. Still fun though.

DBPro pwns for jumping in and creating a simple game quickly, don't expect anything too great though. You tried TrueVsion3D and VB.NET? Talk about simplicity..

Yeah, don't expect HL2, but it's pretty fun nonetheless. I was really into 3D modeling at the time and this fit right in with my programming. I used it for a year or two until I moved out of my game programming phase (I think EVERY programmer goes through that phase lol). It's very, very, very easy to use.

I did have one cool idea that I've never finished. I thought it would be cool to have a visible firewall - a game that you could play that would show you intruders in your network, then you could aim your gun at them and blast them, which would in turn shoot code through your network to kick them off. I never got into networking that much but I always thought it would be cool 😀

Sounds like a visualization you'd see in the movies. Of course it wouldn't take minutes, it'd take seconds, or fractions of a second, and be entirely automated.

Oh noe teh hax0rs are loading a virus on the port!
[firewall is literally a dancing flame image with overlayed icons]
All your base belong to us!
[cue slowly building dramatic music]
[progress bar slowly crawls to indicate file upload, 'fire' is slowly doused]
Launch countermeasures!
[Little agents dart across the screen with flamethrowers, repairing the growing hole]
Hahah u suck n00b!
[their computer explodes from sheer l33tness]

So if you miss.. the intruders are allowed to attack? 😕
