Dark Souls PC version - worth it or no?

I bought it on the Steam sale, I'm installing now. Can anyone point me to that big thread or just give me a quick run down of the mods I definitely need to use?

Btw I will definitely use a 360 controller, I use it for a lot of stuff.

These days the only games for PC I tend to use mouse/keyboard for are StarCraft 2, Diablo 3, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Most other stuff I use the XBox 360 controller for because I like to use my TV across the room as a secondary monitor and play games on that. My monitor is nice but I like the TV usually nowadays.

For CS, StarCraft, Diablo, I want to be up close and personal, using the monitor right in front of me and the mouse/keyboard for precision.

For Fallout 3 or Skyrim or Need for Speed or most other stuff? TV + Controller is how I prefer.

I run at 1080 or 1200 depending on which screen I'm using, and I find that some games just look better on the TV. The monitor, in part because of how close I am, is just very unforgiving. I run at high settings but things can still look bad. Skyrim, for instance, same settings... 1900x1200 on my monitor looks way worse than 1900x1080 on my TV.

The only mod I really used was DSFix. That is really the only thing that is needed. I know there are other mods, but they are not essential, in my opinion, especially since you are using a 360 controller.

You can play it with a keyboard and mouse, but a gamepad is clearly - no, objectively better. The game was designed solely for a gamepad, where left and right bumper buttons and triggers correspond to blocking and attacking, respectively. It feels much better and makes a lot more sense this way.

You can use a kb/m, but you would be doing yourself a disservice. A controller is a better method of input for this game.

I tried using the controller but couldn't really get the hang of it; of course i totally suck I can't even kill skeletons yet in fact I'm feeling pretty hopeless. I did install DSfix and DSMfix; with the controller I have to disable DSMfix but I find the controls really painful either way to be honest.

Don't give up. I was the exact same way (I have about 5 hours total over the last 4 years with the 360 controller, or any console controller for that matter) with the game. Now I can back stab on demand, take out a lot of key monsters with no trouble. The controller becomes second nature... Heck, even locking on isn't something I do much anymore. I prefer manually aiming now most of the time.

Anyway, the game is designed so that it is almost always hard the first few times through a new part. For instance, I am currently in the depths and find that a bit of a struggle. But now I can start a new game and get all the way there with little to no trouble.

Game is deeply rewarding when you progress. Highly addicting.

On the other hand, my brother got pissed off and quit. He kept dieing on the Hydra (a boss I felt was too easy) and then just said he is done with the game. I know I have lost 30K souls on stupid stuff like accidently hitting the roll button and rolling off the cliff to retrieve my souls... OUCH! Did that a few times and at first there may be a bit of anger, but eventually you learn that it is part of the game.

I realize the challenge is a big part of the game, and I like that... to a degree, but I'm curious... are there any mods to make it easier?

sorry the hydra is a super huge PITA. Out of all the mobs in the game I'd have to say that one is one of the worst designed.

There's no good way to target the heads as they get stuck in the ground and its really figuring out the position so that their heads actually land close enough to you just so you can hit them. That's not fun or skillful, it's annoying. Not to mention the barely visible water cliffs that drop you to instadeath... I don't mind that so much, but combined with the hydra's fairly annoying striking patterns (more like you can't hit it...) and the miniboss becomes super annoying for no good reason.

The only way to make the game easier would be to get a cheat program. I know they exist, I've encountered a few people using them online. Kicked a couple of them off edges. Most people who use them aren't particularly good at the game.

Is the controller really that much better than kb/m ? I find that i can do everything (roll, switch items, block, move, lock on) pretty easy. The only thing I can't seem to get right is parry. I am using DSfix and DSMfix.

Then again I'm kind of stuck in the first area after some 10+ hours. I'm like level 12 and keep killing the same thing over and over because I'm not sure how to advance. I found the second camp fire; just outside is an archer that is easy to kill and I can run across the bridge and whack those three pretty easy (in the next tower). I can go past there and kill the three (do all enemies come in 3?) up the steps and the next three down the steps and the three on the roof. I found a shop dealer near there but doesn't seem to be much to buy.

If I go the other way into a tower that goes down and down and down there is another guy who can whack me with a single hit - big mean dude with no sense of humour.

If I go up instead of down that tower I hit a mist area that leads to a boss; I presume the boss is even harder than the two fellows I just mentioned so I have no clue where to head now. Maybe I'm suppose to just do the 15 or so guys I mentioned above and level over and over between deaths ?

The boss is actually (relatively) easy. Do the boss.

The guy downstairs who whacks you with a single hit is a knight. Knights are very tough to fight, early on in the game. You can actually avoid them in most places, but if you choose to fight them and succeed, it can be very rewarding.

He is talking about Havel, who is much harder than your average baddie. The boss fight is pretty simple if you remember some things from the first boss fight you have. *hint hint*. Also, he can jump off the edge, but so can you.


Also, leveling up doesn't work like it does in most games. You can beat the game at Soul Level 1. The games is more about mechanics than actual level. You will never get to a point where you "out level" an area. The weaklings may die to one hit from you, but get ganged up on and you're dead no matter your level.

How do you back stab with kb/m ? If I right click on a baddie who has their back to me not much happens.

I seem to remember M2 being mapped to heavy attack by default. It's light attack, not heavy attack.

Still doesn't seem to work. I used the ctrl key to walk - walk up to the archer (right next to the second camp spot) and tried the left mouse button (instead of right) which I think it light attack and nothing other than a regular hit happened. I don't think he saw me.

I only played the PC version and it works great** I downloaded a mod for it to increase the resolution so it looked way prettier than it would normally look with everything maxed in options** Also controlling the camera with the mouse works like a charm**

With backstabbing, the only thing that matters is positioning and facing. It doesn't care at all if they're aware of you or not. But you need to be facing them, and they need to be facing away from you. Locking on helps a lot here. There's not a lot of tolerance - maybe 20 degrees. Certain attack animations end in position where it looks like they're facing somewhere other then they actually are.

You also can't backstab if you are holding up your shield.

there's very little margin for error for back stabbing. It'll seem hard at first but you'll figure out the tolerance for the backstab and be able to do it fairly consistently.
