Dark pictures on webpages

When I view pictures put on forums or webpages from photos they show up on my screen as very dark. Details are mostly absent. Is there a way to lighten up pictures the IE5.5 shows? Turning up the monitor to max bright helps but they are still dark like badly overexposed photos. Some pictures on webpages are normal, but most where a person has attached a photo to a discussion, etc. are unuseable due to the darkness. Thanks for any suggestions.

very odd. certain pictures are dark...others remain fine.

My suspicion is that the poster's pix have some some unusual parameters or maybe the way pictures were posted changed the settings IE would use to show them.

A followup question: Is there any way to alter the brightness or contrast settings which IE 5.5 uses to show pictures. Are those set by the posting, or can some adjustment (as in page colors, text, etc can be altered) that anyone knows of. Thanks for any advice.
