He's from South Carolina. I don't think he can help but sound a little "twangy".

He's done an R&B album too FWIW.

Pretty much every popular country artist in the last 20 years was at one time or another an aspiring rock start. He just made it before he had to settle on country to pay the bills.

I read on his myspace page that he always wanted to sing country and wanted the band to be a country band but was out voted. He said he would bring in country songs and the band would complain they had to modify them for pop/rock.

Not really.
The majority of popular country singers started out in country. Very few of the artist that sing rock make it in country. People the just settle on country to pay the bills don't make it.
