Dare I trust IBM...

Here is the situation.

I am building a friend a pc, and they decided to change their config AFTER they paid me, and told me to "keep the change."😀

Anyways. I was thinking about getting an MP3 player and a larger Harddrive.

Obviously, the WD 120GB SE 8MB cache model was my first choice, but I would like to say my money and get an Mp3 player as well.

At the moment however, I have an IBM 40GB 60GXP

I also have a tekram IDE RAID card and could just buy another HD and have 80GB total.

So do you think I should get the WD or Dare I trust IBM..?

I don't know but I think my 60GXP 60 GB main drive died 20 min. ago. My system booted to my 2nd drive - 60 GXP 40 GB, which is bootable. What a surprise when it did this yesterday. I should have immediately backed up all my important data, but I didn't see the writing on the wall. I have backup from around 3 weeks ago. Maybe it will boot again, but it's very iffy now. It did boot on the 2nd try yesterday so I said to myself, maybe it was just "one of those things." Um, no.

IBM's support is surprisingly good. I had to RMA two 75GXP drives, and they were very helpfull. On the second occasion, they paid for the international shipping, and were always in contact with me to resolve the issue. Unfortunatelly, they sent me back a 75GXP for the second time, after politely asking them to send me a newer drive. I even sent a link of an AT FAQ. No luck ...

I don't know what to do ... I really don't trust this drive, after the previous one crapped out on me after 21 days. Maybe I should do some intensive read/write tests on it ...

Seems like the 60GXP's and even more so the 120GXP are fine.
I'd steer clear of RAID0 no matter what drive you use though.

Why don't you just get an 800JB or 1000JB instead of the 120?

do they really need 120 anyways? 80 is tons. 😀

I just got the 800JB yesterday and I really like it!! 🙂

As I posted above I think my 60 GB IBM 60GXP is dieing and may go belly up any minute. I bought it online on 9/18/01, OEM. If it dies in the next week can I RMA it or something similar? It's up now and I'm furiously backing up anything that matters much to me to my 2nd HD. Thanks for help.

My crappy Diamond Max+60 drive only lasted about a year (2nd one) the first one got actually fried somehow.
it crashed completely abruptly. it was working fine one day.. the next day, a game wouldn't load.. then i simply tried to reboot, heard some clicking, and got a stop error. real good. it's done.. i got a new 800JB from WD, and I love it.. hopefully it LASTS!!!

The 60GXP drives are not nearly as bad in terms of reliability as the 75GXPs. However, opting for the Wester Digital drive will give you a total of 160GB of storage in combination with your current drive. On top of that, the performance of that drive is definitely no slouch, especially since you plan on option for the 8MB cache version. You won't notice that huge of a difference when comparing RAID0 to a single drive configuration except when opening applications, booting up your system, copying files, or doing some other harddisk intensive operation. Harddisk intensive operations are not that common, and therefore not worth the risk of running two drives that provide only half the space in my opinion.

Or might going with CRAPPY ASS NOISY AS HELL CHEAPASS 45GB SCSI drives be worth it?😉

I don't remember where someone posted that...that would be an awesome deal for storage purposes, if they didn't make so my damn noise😉

So I guess I might end up getting a WD...maybe 120SE...we have to be conservative now don't we...

I'll just keep the 40GB 60GXP as a temp drive for Video editing, as I will always have the master copy on tape so when it ties it won't feel so bad. 😎

I was Really hoping for RAID though...

I guess I'll post my ideas for RAID0 in another

All I can say is this (and I don't care WHAT kind of HD you have): Back up anything you would hate to lose... whereEVER it is... I feel lucky right now. I think my 60 GB 60GXP is dieing and I just backed up everything I can think of and will continue to do so until I'm pretty satisfied. Then I'm going out and will see if I can get at least 2, maybe 3 WD800JB's.

Peole are going to have stories over every brand of hard drive crashing. I personally have seen more Seagates go than I can shake a stick at.

However, recently IBM has had a horrific streak. Whether they have good service or not, whether they have good prices or not, they need to go a while with a good record before I will trust them agian.

Also, good service does you nothing when your drive dies and all of your data is gone.

One final thought, RAID0 (stripping) cut's relaiability in half because if one drive dies you loose ALL data on both drives.

Only do RAID0 for temporary stuff, work in progress, video capture, etc ....

i think it's the anandtech effect, IBM became the lowest price leader so everyone bought, now the only problems you see are from IBM's since the majority have them.

Do you really think a couple people posting on Anandtech forums has anything to do with IBM become the lowest price? Not even close. The 75GXP made a decently large publicity elsewhere, including OEMs that regularly do stress tests.

Anything past 120GXP is reliable, in my book.
