I just sold a tape drive on ebay and the buyer strongly prefers COD. Is there any risk involved for me by doing this? Also, how long does it usually take to get the payment...THanks

It can be risky. If the driver forgets it's cod and leaves the package (this happens more than you think) then your out the money.
Insist on paypal, billpoint, check or money order. Though on a check of course make sure it clears your bank. And with a money order make sure you bank verifies it's valid.

The general rule is to never send something by COD unless they are a past, trustable, customer. There are many risks, including being stiffed entirely on your shipping charges when the buyer decides they don't want your item anymore. Fake/cancelled money orders (buyer gets a real MO, but they then cancel or declare it stolen a day or two later) are another problem. You can insist on cash payment with UPS I think, which eliminates this problem (UPS will then send you a check from their company bank so its good). Watch out though.

Also, if your payment info on ebay never stated you accepted COD, then you do not have to honor their request & can file a final value credit due to failure to follow proper procedures.

edit: spelling

From the USPS:
<<"COD service is used when the mailer wants to collect payment for merchandise and/or postage when it is delivered. COD service can be used for merchandise sent by First-Class Mail, registered mail, Express Mail, Priority Mail, or Standard Mail. The addressee has the choice of paying for the COD at the time of delivery either by cash or personal check, and the merchandise must have been ordered by the addressee.

Fees charged for this service include insurance protection against loss or damage. Insurance coverage is limited to $600. (For details, see Insurance.) This service is not available for international mail or for mail addressed to APO and FPO addresses.">>

I've used COD before, and prefer it. It's never failed me.

From UPS:

<<"Shippers can request that UPS only accept a money order, cashier's check, official bank check, or similar instrument for the exact amount of the C.O.D. package. If shippers do not specify this option, then UPS can also accept a business or personal check. UPS will not accept cash (currency) in any amount for a C.O.D. package. ">>

Fedex:

*We call recipient before delivery so payment can be ready.
*Specify secured or unsecured payment type when preparing the shipping label (if using manual airbills, use the FedEx C.O.D. Airbill).
*Your customer can pay by personal check, money order, cashier's check, company check, official check or certified check.
*Available within the U.S. only.
*Special handling fee applies.
