COPENHAGEN, Denmark - A Danish pizzeria owner who refused service to French and German tourists because their governments didn't back the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites) was convicted of discrimination Tuesday.

Aage Bjerre, who owns a pizzeria on western Denmark's Fanoe island, was investigated by police after he wouldn't serve Germans and French. He called them "anti-American."

In February, Bjerre displayed two homemade pictograms with bars through images of people colored in the hues of the French and German flags. He also reprinted his menus to eliminate German translations.

I forgot that in other countries the government could pretty much tell you how to run your business...

How could you tell if it was a German or a Frenchman anyways?

I'm glad to see that racism is not tolerated in Europe, neither by the government nor by the people. Unlike here in the USA where racism still rules.. just go the south or listen to Ashcroft speaking ..
after all it was only 30 years ago when colored people were forced to sit in the back of a bus and use separate bathrooms.
Considering that Europe used to have similar mentality 60 years ago, we have to wait another 30 years till the US reaches the same level of civilization as Europe...but I have no doubts in my mind that eventually it will evolve to that level... till then, keep on educating the ignorant arrogant American masses.

Sure New York City and Boston are noted bastions of racial and ethnic tolerance.

Flushing, Queens (NYC) has the most ethnically diverse population in the entire world. Over 140 nationalities/ethnicities reside In a 3 sq-mile radius, and generally get along OK. Better than they do in their own nations.

That wasn't meant as a slam against NYC or Boston but I get sick of the ritual "racism in the south" crap that some seem to endlessly spout on this forum.

HAHA. Price of ignorance.

Perfect example of Liberal self-righteous hipocrisy. People boycotting his store and vanadalising it is what he deserved, but him boycotting French and German patrons is ignorance? Same with people expressing their free speech about the dixie Chicks free speech.

Have you ever been to the South before? If so, what cities and what was the duration of your stay?

Yeah right, I am sure it will be totally ok in the States to put up a sign at your Pizzaria "No Blacks" and enforce your Racism ....

Or how about "We don't serve women". Off course the governmment tells you how to run certain aspects of your business.

Yet more slippage in the use of the word "racism". When exactly did German and French become races? I bet they are silly enough to think they are caucasians.

Well, in my sample Pizzaria the sign said "No Blacks" which in the US are regarded as a race. I do know that there is only a human race, but I didnt invent the term. Btw if u are to dense to see the analogy in the discrimination, you are beyond help...

BTW I don't understand your last sentence, neither Germany nor France are even close to the Caucasian Mountains.

This is a favourite of mine too.

Main Entry: race

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle French, generation, from Old Italian razza

Date: 1580

1 : a breeding stock of animals

2 a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b : a class or kind of people unified by community of interests, habits, or characteristics <the English race>

3 a : an actually or potentially interbreeding group within a species; also : a taxonomic category (as a subspecies) representing such a group b : BREED c : a division of mankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterize it as a distinct human type

4 obsolete : inherited temperament or disposition

5 : distinctive flavor, taste, or strength

Race as defined does not necessarily mean that nations cannot be included.

I see no problem with the use of the word racism in this case, in fact, growing up in the UK I've always used (and heard used) the term "race" when sometimes referring to citizens of other countries.

Andy

EDIT: Should say source of definition is www.webster.com. However, they are by no means the only dictionary to carry such a reference.

It is clear from the linked article that what the guy did, misguided or not, was a form of political expression regarding the stand that Germany and France took during the Iraq debates. He did not do it for some typically racist motive such as Danes are the superior "race" and all others pale in comparison, that Germans and French are lesser races not deserving of the same treatment he would extend to fellow Danes. It is certainly debatable whether what he did was smart and it seems that it was definitely against the law in Denmark but to label him a racist in my opinion cheapens the term racism which should be reserved for actions and policies that are truly racist by intent and design.

Are you saying that there are no racists in Europe?

Do you really want to say that?
