Dane Cook is the best

Dane Cooks has some funny material, but he's so overrated. His popularity is booming mostly because he's being marketed heavily towards teens/college students who typically eat up anything their forcefed regardless of quality of content. I remember the first time I ever saw Dane Cook's stand up... it was a few years back... Comedy Central 30min special... most of his stuff was physical comedy and included him shoving his face in the camera or taking his shirt off. Haven't been able to get into him since. There are just so many better comedians out there. Chappelle, Hedburg (RIP), Galifinakis, Gaffigan, Demetri Martin.... just to name a few. Oh I almost forgot... DAVE ATTELL. I fvcking love his old Comedy Central special (bomb/explosion background)... and Insomniac was rad.

I agree, whoever wrote that bit about Dan Cook for the La Times or whatever that was might have been a few of the above......lol.

He's got some pretty funny stuff.

"I was in the kitchen, and I heard it, so i came out".

although much of his stuff is just dependent on gross or sexual humor as opposed to real jokes. he makes me laugh though

he's a douche. HE's an absolute tool in person. Complete asshole. He used to act all high & mighty and Prim & proper, and now he's pissing on the tourgasm bus trying to act like he's a macho guy or some ******. His 2nd cd sucked, his 3rd will suck, his stand up sucks. He's dependent on overexposure and his looks to get girls to like him. He sucks.

yeah, I don't think he's THAT funny. his jokes were funny the first time I heard them, but really, it's just the same couple jokes over and over again... I think the vast majority of his popularity is due to his looks combined with the fact that he's not entirely unfunny. but give his act to an ugly guy and he'd get one special on comedy central and you'd never hear from him again.

certainly not comparable to the legendary comics in their prime (richard pryor, george carlin, eddie murphy, etc).

Wow you guys are comparing cook with people that are either dead, or are like legends in comedy. I'm just saying the guy IS really cool. And not all comics have to talk about the ****** in life and try to make it funny. He actually points out real stuff and exaggerates it which makes it hillarious. And yes, he is cool.

D-bags.

I'm not comparing him with anyone (well, I guess I compared him to Ryan Seacrest). I think his suckiness stands on its own (much as I don't think I need to compare George W. Bush to Abe Lincoln to make the observation that he sucks).

Hm, if a comedian does suck, people 1) Wouldn't laugh at his jokes and 2) He wouldn't be one of the most popular comedians in such a short time period..

Even my parents like Dane Cook. The guy's just hillarious. Watch his Insomniac performance.

He's real funny. Just because he's so popular, lots of people will hate him (as shown in this thread). He does however use A LOT of the same material over and over again. Most of it is really funny though. His standup he did for the Insomniac tour might be the funniest standup i've ever seen (i think all of it is shown on his website in the video section). I watched the first episode of Tourgasm and it was awful so i never watched any of the other ones. Vicious Circle i thought was pretty good though.

He's a cool guy, really nice to his fans and very appreciative. If he wasn't so popular, more people would like him really, that's just how a lot of people are, they can't like someone who's so popular. I've been listening to him since his first CD came out.

No, he just sucks. I seriously TRY to laugh at his material. It's god-awful. It has nothing to do with his popularity.

Search Dane Cook's Insomniac appearance, and if you don't laugh at that, then youre a bag full of douche.

Btw: Ron White is a redneck, and i dont find his stuff funny at all.

RedNeck pointed jokes are funny only if its coming from one...

Maybe, maybe not. People also laugh at horrible sitcoms, Carrot Top, Adam Sandler movies and the Family Circus cartoon, all of which also suck IMO.

Dane Cook, IMO, is popular because teenage girls want him and teenage boys want to be him. He's handsome, glib, and a shameless, prolific self-promoter. He is to comedy what the Olive Garden is to Italian food - crappy, homogenized pap that looks good but tastes like dog sh!t.

I actually had no beef with him as recently as a few months ago. I started watching Tourgasm, because I like standup comedy, and found it shockingly lame, tame, and ultimately soulless (by way of contrast, try watching "The Comedians of Comedy," essentially a similar venture, but actually funny).

I tried watching "Vicious Circle" and was disgusted with it. I guess if I can find the Insomniac performance I'll give it a try, but from my perspective he's down 5-0 at the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and two strikes.

He's got some funny stuff - but does smack of someone who won't be remembered for long.

Russell Peters is another funny comic, although I've only seen two of his stand-ups.

Hating Dane because of Tourgasm is being a retard. I wasn't impressed with it either, but it looked more like a autobiography type of thing so i didn't care. All his other stuff are the sh1t. Search the Insomniac stuff on YouTube, its on there. You can look at some of the audio sh1t from Retaliation too. "Exaggeration" is a good one. So is "Someone Has Sh1t On ..".

Not everyone likes their comedians to be alcoholic chain smokers that bitch on incessantly about how much their life sucks and complain about how everyone around them is an idiot.

Exactly. This:

he seems completely free from angst, anger, sadness, or any of the other personality traits that make true comics funny.

Is what pisses me off about many comedians these days. The pissed-off-angry-fvck act was beaten to death by Carlin and many others YEARS ago. When someone finally comes along and is just funny because he can be entertaining and happy, not depressing and bitchy, people berate him for it. WTF?

The formula for comics are this:

1) Bitch about stuff. Bitch, yell, and bitch some more about how stuff sucks.
2) Race jokes. I'm not sure most ethnic comedians can really do anything else, because it's rare that even when they're amusing, it's still the same crap about people's race.
3) Swear... a LOT.
4) Be generally incredibly disgusting and obscene (see #3).

That's about it. Cook has a small amount of this mixed in with his material, but his entire standup isn't about someone's fat black date, or how sick and nasty little Johnny was, or how much the world sucks ass and he can't wait to die so he can get away from all the @#$%ing @#$@!mn people.

That's not at all what I meant. I am not saying comics' acts need to be about their personal pain. There are plenty of wonderful comics (e.g., Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, Leno in his prime, etc.) who don't whine, but their art is still influenced by being picked on as a kid, or being ugly, or growing up in a poor neighborhood.

My own feeling is that it's literally impossible for a comic to be truly funny when his life has been one big love-fest. I'd go as far as to say that's true for any form of art - no truly significant painter, musician, or author has sprung from a charmed background, because people like that just don't have anything interesting to talk about. Dane Cook really is very reminiscent of a Ryan Seacrest or a Justin Timberlake IMO, and that's why none of these people will be remembered 20 years from now.

That's far too broad an assertion to make, especially with respect to musicians. Some of the greatest composers the world have ever seen grew up very affluently and with every advantage. Some of our better philosophers, scientists, authors, etc. were also very affluent. My ATOT namesake, for example, was very wealthy. Would you say that someone as affluent as Descartes had nothing worthy to say?

Anyway, I won't take it too far. The assertion just doesn't make any sense. It seems you're just attacking his background and not his comedy. You say his comedy sucks because he has the perception of having lived a privileged life. I don't see how that matters, and it's a fallacious argument to make.

In the end, we're all entitled to our opinions. He's made me laugh as have a lot of other comics, but I couldn't care less what their background is.

Fair enough - I think my assertion was indeed too broad. That being said, I think it's absolutely valid as to standup comedy, rock music, and most forms of fiction (i.e., things that involve a certain rebelliousness, spark, and wit). I still maintain that to a large extent the reason Dane Cook's "comedy" is so soulless is that he appears never to have struggled against anything, and so his act is entirely self-congratulatory and uninspired. I don't think it's a coincidence, for example, that so many successful comics have come from long-suffering minority groups (most particularly Jewish and black comics).

I get a kick out of his stuff. Is he the most hilarious comedian? No, but he gets the job done. He makes people laugh. I used to be a huge Carlin fan until I saw him live twice. The second time was exactly the same verbatim as the first, but he mixed it up by reading his finale off of a piece of paper, because he couldn't remember it. That's just sad.
