Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2

Well, I've played the original Dance Dance Revolution on the 360 and I had a lot of fun playing it. It has the same rhythmic challenge as Guitar Hero but instead of promoting carpal tunnel syndrome, you'll be burning calories.

The game itself isn't much different than DDRU in modes. It adds a new mode designed more toward kids and really (and I mean really) bad players. The mode literally is just a freestyle type of dance thing. I haven't really tried it since I've mostly been busy beating some songs, but I guess that's a good thing?

The biggest differences you'll notice are the graphics are all different. It seems this one has a more "freestyle" look to it... I guess? Also (obviously) the songs are different. But the songs is really where the game is at. I've found quite a number of songs that I enjoy getting my boogie onto. The game has fun songs that just about everyone knows such as Men Without Hats - Safety Dance, Kool and the Gang - Jungle Boogie, The Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian and Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (this one feels more like a GH song though).

One of the nice features to stay is the workout mode which actually gives you some sort of depiction of how many calories you supposedly burn. It's a good way to convince yourself you're doing more than just playing a video game 😉.

But, the game ain't perfect. I complained about a bug a bit ago ( http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=79&threadid=2099901 ) that was pretty irritating as for those who don't want to read the thread, it seems DDRU will not save your information if you win. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but what I did was:

Played Men Without Hats - Safety Dance on difficult. Failed once. Tried again. Failed again. Tried again, passed with a D. The song select screen lists an 'E'. I tried the song again, this time determined to get video proof! I beat the song again, and the song select screen still lists it as an 'E'.

Here's the video on it:

Apologies in advance, I was trying out for the next Bourne film.

Disappointingly enough with this bug, I did report it to Konami months ago and it seems nothing was done about it 🙁.

All in all, I've had a lot of fun with the game and if you enjoy Guitar Hero, you may like this too. Heck, some chicks like it too, so maybe the missus will enjoy it 🙂. Since I own both DDRU's, I now have two mats which is even better!

Oh and I know I've read that some people didn't like the timing in DDRU.... I'm no DDR expert, so I can't tell you if it's any better in DDRU2.

Not sure, it turns up ever so often. I only ever saw it on one song in DDRU, but it's quite possible that it just never turned up again. I wish I could create some repeatable steps for it =\.

its good to hear it has a kid mode, ive been thinking of getting this for my kids...i have a questions maybe you guys can answer

can multiple people play at the same time..if i bought another map can they both play at the same time?

I think it's a nice addition too. I've seen parents in stores trying to show DDR to their kids and I just think, "sorry, there's no way most young kids could play DDR." Note that when I mean young, this young girl had to be 5... 6?

Yes, it's a little awkward how they describe it, but whenever you see "Select Panels," that's equivalent to "Select Players." Essentially, 4 Panels = 1 Player, so if you select 8 Panels, that means you have two mats (with 4 arrows/panels each) to use.

Most people probably do not recommend any soft mat to be honest. I don't mind them but hard mats are much nicer but also more expensive. You'd probably be fine with the mats from the game if you have no experience with better mats (so you have nothing to mentally compare it to). I ended up with two mats now because I bought the original game in the bundle and the second one in the bundle. That might be a nifty way to go as both games have different songs, but only the second game (DDRU2) features that anything goes dance mode (but hey, you can't "die" in practice mode anyway).

Also, I recommend turning off the announcer. They're quite demeaning if you mess up, fail or do poorly.

What mats are people recommending for the 360 games? I had two..blegh, I totally forget the company now, but they were the best non-metal mats for the original xbox, but they both broke, one rather quickly, so I'd like to stay away from that company.
