Dance Dance Revolution on a projector?

Well, I was looking through the Black Friday ads, and I see a Toshiba DLP Projector for $500 after rebate at Best Buy, and an Infocus one for the same price after rebate at Staples. I thought that it would be pretty cool to get one, stick it in my basement, and connect my PS2 to it to play DDR on it. Would that work well? Also, I have an unfinished basement, so no white walls to project one. What's something that I could get to projec the image on? Also, if I bought a home theater setup for it, could I hook that up to my projector?

What infocus model is it?

Games work well on my DLP projector.

Lots of cheap possibilities for screens. Might want to check out the DIY are and Digital projector area of AVSforum for ideas.

You'd hook this up to your HT set like any other display.

BF2005 for Black Friday ads.

I'm pretty sure the Toshiba is this one. The BF ad just says "Toshiba Multimeda DLP Projector". The Infocus ad says "SP4805 Remanufactured DLP Projector". I'm pretty sure that means refurbished...

Kinda early for this, but the thread is kinda slipping away, and I need to go to sleep, so bumpy...

$500 for a refurb 4805 is a nice deal. 4805 is the projector I have and I'm very happy with it.

It's great for first person shooters and videogames with friends.

I've played MarioKart64 with a bunch of people on it and it was great. I get about a 60" 4:3 image, so it was like each person had their own 30" screen to look at. Too bad the graphics are so bad ;)

Check out the Infocus 4805 threads on AVSforum.

Okay, so what kind of speakers can I hook up to this thing? Do I have to go out and buy a home theater setup? Or could I just plug in regular computer speakers?

We had DDR at a big LAN event a couple of months ago and it worked great on a big screen. You can buy a projector screen for a pretty decent deal or there are many sites around which will show you how to make your own homemade screen for low cost.

If you want sound, usually all projectors have pretty basic and crappy sound if at all, so you will need to have something that will drive your sound.

Ie. if you use a PS2, just imagine what you will hook your RCA or optical audio connector into. Yes you can hook it up to a receiver with speakers (that's the best route if you have that already), but you don't need to.. you can find some decent computer speakers which have optical in connections which will allow you to use just a powered speaker set.

Yep, I recently picked up a refurbed 4805, and it is stellar. I'm currently even using it in a room where light control is a bit hard (especially during the day, need to get some nice thick dark curtains or something), and projecting it on an off-white/eggshell colored wall, and it still looks great.

I'm not sure how well DDR would work if you have the actual dancepad/mat thing, as you might end up standing in the way of the projection. If you're just using a controller or would be off to the side then it'd be great.

It has a mini-plug connector (like you'd find on an audio card) so you should be able to plug computer speakers into it I would think.

I tried that just two days ago and results were not good.

My professor for History of Education 412 isn't very technologically inclined but wanted to show our class of about 200 some VHS tapes. His plan was to take a 20" tv with built in VCR and use that for the presentation.

I e-mailed him after class and on the day of the video I took in my projector and a hodge-podge sound system of my bass shaker receiver and a couple Logitech z-560 satellites and the results were pretty good.

Yesterday I was testing out an alternate configuration for the video that was today and during part of my testing ran audio through the projector to adapt RCA to the integrated 3.5mm connection. It introduced a good amount of high pitch static to the signal.

If you want to hook up computer speakers to your PS2 or some other AV component, use one of these adapters and it should work just fine.

So there's no problem going with refurb right? I'm worried that the bulb will blow out, and it'll cost quite a bit to replace. Do refurb projectors usually come with warranties? The ads don't give any details...

We had our setup where the projector was in front aimed at the screen, and the game machine was hooked up behind with the mats going back further. It didn't really take up that much space either. All in all, it was about 15' but you could probably do with less if you worked out the positioning better.. ie. put one mat on one side and one on the other side of the projector.

Refurb should be ok. Usually most refurb items have a warranty, even if it is a shorter one than the new retail one. Bulbs can go at any time but usually have a few thousand hours depending on the model. They can cost a bit, but that comes with the territory if you want a projector.

Just run the audio to the HT system and the video straight to the projector.

Remember it's not the projector that creates the sound, it's the source.
Ie. The PS2, your PC, DVD player, etc.

So your cables are going to have separate audio/video connectors and one will go to the projector for video, while the others will go to your sound receiver/speaker setup (whether it be L/R RCA plugs, or an optical cable). I think some projectors do have audio out, but it's pointless in this scenario. I would just go directly to your receiver from the PS2.
