Dance Dance Revolution...my basement has kind of a low ceiling...

I've been thinking about trying this game out, buying a cheap pad from best buy with a gift card I got.

But I'd like to do it in the basement to avoid stomping around and making a lot of noise. Do you end up jumping very high in this game?

Also...any recommendations for a pad?

Personally, I don't jump very high, but if your ceiling is low enough to worry about, it could be a problem. Soft pads are typically sensitive, so it's not like you need to jump high and stomp.

If you get a pad from BB, get the cheapest one they have. AFAIK, they only have 1 or 2 different pads with similar quality.

Old DDR thread with pad recommendations. My suggestion is BNS Ultra DX (www.buynshop.com, soft pad with hard foam).

im a causal player. i got the 19.99 pads from gamestop. work perfect for me. but i suck at the game.

and i dont jump high either.

How are the soft pads anyway? I've read they can sometimes rip or get smooshed up. Should I throw down a piece of carpet?

I'm only 5'9"...but I can touch the ceiling/rafters while standing. I'll measure when I get home.

I played in a basement for a while, tile over concrete foundation. We used a piece of carpet foam under our pads - it helped with impact and slipping, but it collected static. We had tried carpet first, but the pad would stay on the carpet while the carpet slid on the floor.

I played on a soft/no foam pad briefly, didn't really like it because it bunched up. I killed one pad with static in under a month (not progressive damage, 1 big zap), but its replacement has been going strong with occasional play for 6+ months. The guy I played with in the basement took about 6 months to break his pad down to where it was noticeably inconsistent (no tears on the outside). However, he weighed around 200lbs and played 7 days a week for 2-3 30+min sessions per day.

I remember reading where someone did kind of a mod for their softpad. They duct taped it down to a piece of peg board then duct taped some cut squares of plastic on top of that.

Yeah, I've been reading a little bit about the mods people do to the soft pads to make them more like the hard ones. I might buy one of those big cheap ass walmart carpets or something. There's a pretty big difference between the cheap softpads and the mid range ones price wise it seems. I'm not looking to be super great here...I just don't want to fall on my ass or have to reset the thing every 10 seconds.

Unless you're doing fancy tricks, you wont need to jump that high. Place your feet horizontally (square w/ shoulders), now jump and move then to a vertical position (like riding a skateboard), however much room you need for that movement is how much room you'll need

I have two $20 pads and they have withstood fairly regular use at times. The only real problem I've had is that the pad itself slips around during an intense song and then I end up losing my orientation.

The salesperson recommended that I don't get the konami (green and red one) but otherwise it would be fine. If you are just getting into it, it's not worth the effort to rig some custom pad up. You might not even like the game.

you shouldn't be jumping uber high. I did fine at 6'3" with 7 ft celings.

I should be alright then, ceiling is 6'6". I guess I had more room then I thought.
