The British IndyCar champion killed in a 225mph smash had been offered a $5million incentive to race from the back, it was revealed today.
As tributes poured in to Dan Wheldon, it also emerged that the 33-year-old had voiced concerns about the speed of cars and the cramped conditions on the track.
The father-of-two suffered horrendous injuries after his car hit another vehicle at breakneck speeds in the Las Vegas Indy 300. He was catapulted helplessly into the air before landing on a barrier and suffering fatal injuries.
Mr Wheldon's Dallara-Honda had weaved its way through the field of cars after starting at the back in a desperate bid to claim the lucrative prize.
Just days earlier Mr Wheldon had joined a number of other drivers in expressing the fears over the speed of cars and the cramped conditions on the oval shaped track. But in a blog post, he had promised fans he would go out to win and put on a show of 'pure entertainment'.
The 1.5 mile-long Motor Speedway track in Las Vegas is 60 per cent shorter than the one used for Indy-33 races. It may have caused a deadly combination of 34 cars crowded on the track, lighting fast speeds and fierce competition.

On occasion I would work the infield during races. (Yes, with my ambulance.) The emergency crew there is one of the best, and it's headed by the head trauma doc at UMC (Level 1 trauma center). They also keep a helo on standby in the infield right next to the treatment center. He had the best care he could have hoped for, that's for sure.

Those open wheel cars are just sooooo dangerous, what a shame. R.I.P.

Oh man! Besides the other cars that went full on airborne, at around :29 into that video look at the inside white line. One car just launches over another and goes airborne all the way into the other two that had already launched, landing near the high wall.

That crash will be talked about for years, damn. 🙁

his car hit the fence on the cockpit side first. he was dead before they got to him. rip

After seeing the replay from multiple angles, that crash really was a lot worse than I had thought. I know racing drivers are aware of the risk involved, but it's still a shame when one gets killed. RIP Dan, seemed like a great guy from all the interviews I've seen of him. 🙁

Actually no, he pretty much hit straight backwards before flipping around and the car going up in flames. Mostly likely g-force induced injuries from going 200+mph to much slower than that.

Here is a video that towards the end shows the cockpit camera of Wheldons car through the ordeal:

If you're referring to the number 12 car that goes airborne, that's Will Power, not Wheldon.

Wheldon was an incredible racing talent and looked to have a budding career in broadcasting races. Dan worked in the broadcast booth for the races televised on Versus after losing his seat post Indy.....he seemed to be a natural in his color commentary role--very insightful and highly enthusiastic. You could tell he really wanted to get back behind the wheel.

I didn't pay too close attention to the pre-race interviews, but if I remember correctly, Franchitti opined in an eerie foreshadowing of the events to follow that Las Vegas was not an appropriate venue for Indycar racing. These short high banked high speed ovals are dangerous for open wheel racing. I realize they are great for the spectators, but spectators don't need to see their favorite drivers killed. These types of venues should be removed from this series going forward.

RIP Dan.

Stupid fucks shouldn't be racing on 1.5 mile ovals made for Nascar. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

EDIT: Stupid fucks = Indy Car officials who decided they should race at these venues.

shouldn't race open wheel on ovals, period. what's the point?

bad accident. i'm wondering how much reaction time any of them had- some of them definitely look like they're trying to capitalize by taking the inside instead of braking, but maybe that's more of a gut reaction.
