DAN Rather and Tom Brokaw "ENOUGH REAGAN !"

June 9, 2004 -- DAN Rather and Tom Brokaw work for dif ferent networks but agree one thing ? coverage of Ronald Reagan's death has been excessive, they say.
"Even though everybody is respectful and wants to pay homage to the president, life does go on," Rather told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"There is other news, like the reality of Iraq," said the "CBS Evening News" anchor. "It got very short shrift this weekend."

Networks have been going almost wall-to-wall with coverage since Reagan passed away Saturday at the age of 93. The former president was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease nearly 10 years ago.

"Once the herd starts moving in one direction, it's very hard to turn it, even slightly," Rather said. "Nationally, the herd has grown tremendously."

"I think just about everything is over-covered these days," said Brokaw, who anchors the "NBC Nightly News." "The spectrum is so crowded. With all the cable networks, it begins to have a 'video wall' feeling to it."

Jennings said he had mixed feelings about the Reagan coverage.

"I'm more inclined to spare coverage ? come on [the air], do something meaningful, then get away," he said.

"The last time I had to do it was with O.J. Simpson [during the 1994 car chase], and I had nothing to say after a certain period of time."

Article

The whole OJ thing went on for over a year and these pretty boys can't handle a week of Reagan? I am sure there is someone just in New Deli that is capable of doing their TV reporting jobs for a small fraction of the price.

Ah quit sniveling, they were just stating their opinions. Frankly I think one or two days of the Networks beinfg saturated by Reagan's death was more than enough. It's not like a standing President died after all.

I didn't hear these windbags complaining that there was too much "Tanya & Nancy" or " Jon Benna Ramsey" - There is a massive out pouring of emotion from the American people - just look at all the traffic jams and people wait hours to pay thier respects. This is a huge story, and people cannot get enough of it.

Talk about running something into the ground how about Fox's coverage of the Scott Peterson trial. Good fscking grief!

Yet another reason to avoid watching broadcast network "news".

Agreed. What's going on right now is half the problem with the news media outlets today and it's good to hear some tenured members of it express concern about it. Too bad they work for someone that tells them what to do.

Note that all the examples that have been raised as comparable involved criminal cases, where there is an entire trial for people to follow, and there are often developments as the investigation and pretrial process goes on. In this instance, everyone in America has known for at least ten years that Reagan had Alzheimer's, and he was very old, so I don't see his death as a continuing news item. I am definitely pretty well over it myself.

Very true. Though I suspect they're more annoyed by the news because

1) A death several days ago doesn't exactly bring in the huge ratings nor can they make it as action packed or as constantly updated as the above examples. They're beating a dead horse (no pun intended) and getting no money out of it. The stations repeating Reagan gibberish are merely afraid to be the first to drop the topic. Like 3 years ago, if a news channel stopped were to stop talking about 9-11 too early, the viewers would switch to a different channel until they got their fill of flags waving across the TV screen

Edit: Ignore the "1)"

Princess Diana got as much, if not more, coverage and she didn't do 1/(10^6) as much good for the world as Regan did.

a) This just isn't true - there was not nearly the kind of all-day coverage of her death and funeral as there has been of Reagan's.

b) She died prematurely and violently, so again there was a lot of intrigue about what caused her death, whereas everyone in America has expected Reagan to go at any time for years.

We saw just as much coverage with Princess Di and JFK Jr. deaths. And we are still stuff about JFK sr

Again, I don't think this is true - the coverage of these deaths (with the exception of JFK Sr) was not nearly as constant, or reverential. Also, as I said before, these deaths were sudden and unexpected, and there was a need to investigate out how and why the decedents died. RR's death has been predictable for many years - if anything it's surprising he lived nearly as long as he did, given his Alzheimer's.

I agree that there was way too much news coverage of JFK, Jr's death and funeral. He never held political office, but we had nearly continuous coverage culminating in his burial at sea off a warship (how he ranked that, I will never figure out).

Princess Diana was always a creature of, and darling to, the popular media. Every aspect of her life was covered way too much in the media, but there must have been a demand for it or the viewers/readers wouldn't have been there.

I agree that much of the media focus on Reagan's death has been of the "pile-on" category also. This is probably a slow news week, which could explain some of it. I wish the media would focus a bit more on the Reagan family's efforts (especially Nancy and Ron, Jr.) to promote stem cell research to combat Alzheimer?s. I lost my mother to it last year, and several uncles and aunts earlier. Its frustrating to see the efforts to stop such a horrible disease (and one I have a pretty good chance of getting) hampered because of the extreme religious views of those at the head of our government.

You think Dan Rather is pretty? :Q

A case of people are not hearing what THEY want you to hear. I think a lot of people have forgotten ( or in the case of this forum werent even aware) how popular Reagan was. In the case of the networks, they would rather forget.

One of the greatest presidents died. By the way, any former President that dies is a MAJOR story and should be covered like it. He was a great man and made America stronger and ended the Cold War. God Bless Ronald Reagan.

The liberal media is trying to sugar coat Bush in Reagan candy. A vote for Bush is a vote for Reagan. They are both the sweet sunny face of the military industrial complex run by the Devil's Vampiric Mafia that feeds and profits on fear induced violence. Do you see the taps in your veins?

I don't think he was one of the greatest. I was around during his terms and he screwed up plenty. Of course compared to Carter, Ford, Nixon the First Bush, Clinton and especially the Dub me might have seemed great.

Not in the states, but we certenly did have all-day coverage of her and coverage of her funeral.

The importance of someone, and how much coverage their death should get, should be related to public interest:
All but one state voted for regan, as such their is an amazing amount of public interest in this: the most popular presedent sence FDR.

be honest, libbes just hated how regan proved that the american spirit of can-do is a conservative one.

The Libbies might have but a lot of Democrats liked him. Unlike the Dub, Reagan appealed to members of both parties.

That is such malodorous, simple minded bullsh!t bigotry! :|

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

Harry S. Truman: "The buck stops here."

and

John Fitzgerald Kennedy: "Ask NOT what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

are just three sterling and conclusive counter-examples that come immediately to mind.

Not only is the American "can do" spirit not an exclusively conservative one, saying it is is as ignorant and stupid as it is unamerican! :|

I bet when Clinton dies they will spend weeks praising him. A lot like the planned two to four weeks of pre book release constant news he will get this Summer. The major news networks already plan for a nearly non stop barrage of Clinton crap - including using Clinton's excerpts as pseudo news clips for two weeks. What the hell.

And they complain when perhaps one of the top five presidents this nation has ever seen has a state funeral.
