Okay guys!!!!!

Enlighten me
I'm not the most seasoned system builder, but I've done a few

system is as follows:
8k7a board
1.2ghz tbird 266
GWIN CAK38 Copper Fan/HS
256meg of crucial ddr
antec sx830
teac burner and reader, both scsi on adaptec non boot card
kingston ethernet for dsl modem
elsa geforce erazor x 32meg
ibm 75gxp 40gigger
.........
had sblive, but switched to on board snd to see if that might be part of the problem

here's the problem:

fdisked, reformatted, set bios to optimal settings, disabled sound, plugged in yes to plug and play os and enabled usb mouse......those are only settings i tweaked after installing the latest bios for the board......

installed win98
then win98se over that

then installed amd miniport driver
via busmater driver
via usb filter driver per epox's instructions

no cards in box at this point cept video and scsi.......

then i install direct x 8
then i install nvidia references for geforce
then i install kingston ethernet card drivers
reboot and put kingston card in......it's recognized fine
recognizes onboard sound fine

set up internet connection data, and go out and download intellimouse
drivers from microsoft for my optical usb mouse which i haven't hooked up

download em, install em and then reboot.......all's fine

plug mouse in, is recognized all is fine

here's the ISSUE! (not a problem, it's an ISSUE)

anytime i do a soft reboot, like restarting after updating drivers etc....
the mouse is detected as unknown usb device and goes dark, totally non function...

if i then hard reboot, it still doesn't do anything

if i go into device mgr and delete the unknown usb device and hard reboot, it'll
find it again just fine and all is good til next soft reboot

a gentleman here, said i needed to check refresh pool data or sumthin in bios...but for the life of me, i find no such setting............

can someone help me???

I'm starting to believe that the better regarded a board is, the more it's gonna suck for moi'

I oughta get the lowest recommended board available, and I bet I'll have awesome luck.

This board should NOT do funny things with my usb devices and I've heard others complain about the usb performance of this board.....

So far I'm unimpressed

Try disabling USB error detection for the USB host controller in device manager

HOLY SH^t!!!

It fixed it.

To be fair.....I did find a link to it on Epox's knowledge base right after posting that ...
but you were right on the money..........

I've soft rebooted 5 times now and everything is OK!

Ya know??????????

This is maybe an odd thought for a human to have, but

1. If there's a problem with AMD chips over 300mhz and Via Usb drivers
and
2. Epox is putting out a board that is for WAY over 300mhz chips and uses a Via USB driver
and
3. Lots of us technophobes have LOTS of usb devices (cuz they're cool)

.....................

It would seem to me a prudent idea to maybe bundle the Microsoft Shutdown fix
on the Epox distribution CD with instructions to install it along with the other
things.........

Just my dumbness thinking again.......but it sure woulda saved me some headaches

Now.......next question guys:

if i install the via bustmeister driver
do i then enable dma in the device manager????

why?
why not?

thanks

Zuluwarrior,
Thanks for this thread.
I had trouble too and ended up using my PS2 adapter for my mouse.
