Here's how it goes;
Want to maybe buy a new PC: spoke w/ wife, she says "no".
- Went on Ebay.
- Just for kicks - and cause I am an idiot (I'm sure you guys see where this is going) - I bid on a cpu for a low price, thinking I won't win.
. . .
- I ended up winning.
To be fair, it's just a single component and I ended up spending less than $100 on it (it was an i3-530 if you must know) so she's not going to kill me but potentially shove her foot up my ass - what would YOU do to diffuse the situation if you were in my (idiotic) shoes?
Edit: I'm adding this response as I go into a bit more detail - and no, I am not changing the word "kill" to "be slightly annoyed at" in the title - dramatic/poetic license, people!
Nah, it's not THAT big a deal.
It's just that when I ask "can I get a new desktop/laptop", I'm not really asking if I can get just 1 component - I don't have any other parts laying around for a desktop so if I do keep this thing and put it to use, I'm going to have to get a mobo, RAM, HDD, OS etc. - which I'm NOT going to do without her consent (which may end up being a painful ordering-a-component-per-month as punishment)
To be perfectly frank if I pressed the issue I can get her to say yes - but she won't like it. And at this moment I'd have to concede that a new computer would be a "want", definitely not a "need". And I understand that it's not really what I bought that matters, but she said no (and I agreed to it) and yet I still (intentionally or not) got it!
But I haven't told her yet (I didn't find out I've won until she went to bed already) and at most she's going to be annoyed about it when I tell her - and I guess I just feel guilty about not listening to her!

I can't really see myself caring if my husband bought another computer so I don't really have any good suggestions on what to tell her, sorry. Is it really that big a deal in your house?
