Damnit the wife is going to kill me!

Here's how it goes;

Want to maybe buy a new PC: spoke w/ wife, she says "no".
- Went on Ebay.
- Just for kicks - and cause I am an idiot (I'm sure you guys see where this is going) - I bid on a cpu for a low price, thinking I won't win.
. . .
- I ended up winning.

To be fair, it's just a single component and I ended up spending less than $100 on it (it was an i3-530 if you must know) so she's not going to kill me but potentially shove her foot up my ass - what would YOU do to diffuse the situation if you were in my (idiotic) shoes?

Edit: I'm adding this response as I go into a bit more detail - and no, I am not changing the word "kill" to "be slightly annoyed at" in the title - dramatic/poetic license, people!
I can't really see myself caring if my husband bought another computer so I don't really have any good suggestions on what to tell her, sorry. Is it really that big a deal in your house?

Nah, it's not THAT big a deal.

It's just that when I ask "can I get a new desktop/laptop", I'm not really asking if I can get just 1 component - I don't have any other parts laying around for a desktop so if I do keep this thing and put it to use, I'm going to have to get a mobo, RAM, HDD, OS etc. - which I'm NOT going to do without her consent (which may end up being a painful ordering-a-component-per-month as punishment)

To be perfectly frank if I pressed the issue I can get her to say yes - but she won't like it. And at this moment I'd have to concede that a new computer would be a "want", definitely not a "need". And I understand that it's not really what I bought that matters, but she said no (and I agreed to it) and yet I still (intentionally or not) got it!

But I haven't told her yet (I didn't find out I've won until she went to bed already) and at most she's going to be annoyed about it when I tell her - and I guess I just feel guilty about not listening to her!

meh why bother asking if you don't give a shit what she says? just order and suffer her wrath. make sure you get some porn since she won't give you some.

what would i do? well not that. i would have talked to her and said why i want/need a new computer. if a good reason my wife would agree.

Lol. Resell it here or on eBay?

I would test it first so your reputation isn't damaged for selling a dead processor.

this. I'm not up on processor prices but if you got a good deal then tell her about it and let her know that you are going to sell it.

Haha this reminds me when a friend of mine bid on a news helicopter thinking the same thing and he won! He followed through and had it delivered to his shop. I told him if I were his wife he'd be in trouble because I hate helicopters. Not because he paid $175k which later I found out was a good price and indeed he made some money on it.

Later he thanked me because he felt bad (knowing how I feel about helicopters) and actually made some money selling it. He offered to buy me a car. (but I don't drive!)

Boy do I hate those things.

Did I say I hate helicopters yet?

:D

Daauuuuuum. A bit harsh, but I'd have to agree (but I do listen to her . . . most of the time! And I really feel bad!).

ok.. here's a stupid question... but if you feel so bad about winning it...

just...

dont pay for it.

yea, you'll get a non-paying bidder hit... but... its ebay.. who gives a fuck?

We used to bid on stuff like Ferrari's and stuff, just to do it. I bid on a complete carnival once.. rides, hot dog stands, circus.. the whole shebang..

Nah, I've won it for a good price; and if she decided to tell me to sell it after I tell her, I think I can sell it still and break even, at the very least.

dont tell her and upgrade your current comp, keeping the case the same. She will never know.

Is the op so broke that $100 is really going to make or break the bank???

not everyone has mommy & daddy buying them stuff, borrowing mommy & daddy's car... making up stories on the internet.

you'll learn that once you become a man(woman?) and move out on your own... and learn to live within a budget.
