After keeping an eye out at slickdeals and on craigslist, I decided that I wasn't going to beat the $20 asking price Gamestop has for Valkyria Chronicles. $21 with tax, not too bad I thought.
When I got home I was checking craigslist for some other titles and out of habit looking up VC. To my dismay someone had it posted for $10! I emailed them asking about location. It turns out they're about a 25-30 minute drive each way. It was so tempting but after thinking about it I decided that the $10 (more like $7 if I account for gas) isn't worth the time to go purchase the used copy and return the new one.
While I really wish I had seen the deal before buying the game new, I'm hoping that maybe another "new" sale will encourage a ps3 sequel. I doubt it, but it makes me feel a little better.
And yes, I am a cheap-ass.

Eh, you got a new copy for $10 more. More than worth the risk of the disk being no good.

I haven't bothered trying to confirm this, but I recall reading posts here and there claiming that the bluray disks are much more resilient than dvd's and cd's. Because of that I haven't worried whether a used ps3 game will play or not.

Scratches are scratches... You didn't know of the condition of the used disk (first hand), however you knew the condition of the new disk.

Besides, its only $20.
