i haven't looked at it closely - but there's a very slow leak (looks like transmission fluid) from where the driveshaft first enters the transmission.

I think that's the pinion seal - but don't know for sure.

Anyone know how hard this is to change/fix?

EDIT:

okay - changed it last night. one potentially major question...

Basically, once I removed the driveshaft, there was a rubber flange... that seemed somewhat difficult to pull out (but still was able to pull it out by hand.) Underneath that is the actual 'oil seal'. I changed the oil seal, but this rubber flange thing doesn't seem to want to go in as tight as it was. I pushed around the edges, and tried pushing with a plastic rod thing - and it seems completely seated - but I'm not sure it will stay in place. It looks to be primarily something that keeps water out (since it has a drain hole in the bottom) rather than the tranny fluid in.

Anyone have any idea if this is a big deal? I haven't added more tranny fluid in case I had to pull the driveshaft again

nope, pinion seal is the other end...where the yoke on the differential is connected...your leak is at the tailshaft of the transmission...the bushing inside is probably worn and causing the seal to leak.....if you wish to find out..the easiest way is to replace the tailshaft seal and wxtch to see if the leak comes back in a few thousand miles........just remove the driveshaft and replace the seal, easy fix, if you have a 12 point 12 mm wrench or socket....6 point wont work....

yeah I'm sure I have a 12mm 12 pt socket.

arg - according to haynes removing my driveshaft looks a HUGE pita - have to remove the rear axle shafts... one of those things where its like

to remove driveshaft:

remove rear brakes (see section 2a)
remove rear axle shafts (see section 4b)
remove rear axle assembly (see section 5r)

remove driveshaft.

yeah. 4 steps my ass

No.. that manual is wrong, I'm 99% sure.

there's a few bolts holding the driveshaft to the pinion (rear end), unbolt those, then you should be able to remove the driveshaft. Be careful, you may have some fluid run out when you remove the driveshaft. If it;s a 2-piece driveshaft, you may have to remover the center support bearing too.

Crawl under there and take a look, it's not that hard of a job.

Although - after looking into it - you may need a special tool to replace the rear seal.

In this picture, you can see the flange that the driveshaft bolts to.

Those instructions sound more like removing an axle shaft, rather than a drive shaft...How about some vehicle specifics? I've never had to go through all that just for a driveshaft.

Yeah, that sounds goofy. No reason to remove axle shafts, unless you're screwing with the transfer case of a 4WD.

Drive shaft comes off by removing four bolts that secure the rear U-joint to the differential. Shaft just slides free after that. Fun starts when you try to get at that seal in the back of the tranny.

does it leak 1 qt a week?

If not leave it alone,
change the tranny fluid every 40-50,000 miles.

use Merc V fluid,if Automatic.

arg damn I was wrong - you guys were right. Mark the shaft, remove 4 bolts, driveshaft comes out. I bet autozone will rent me the tool.

It's leaking maybe a quart a month - but I have to use a hand pump to add fluid - so no thanks on that. There's already a pancake sized oil spot from this on my driveway (on a second though - anyone know how to get that off?)

manual says plain merc, specifically says not merc V... (it's a 5 speed)

First things first - Take it to a carwash and get rid of the fscking 50 lbs of dirt from my last 'expedition' (one time, ONE TIME I go off road and what a GIGANTIC pita to clean the truck. f-ing ridiculous.)

and before someone starts b!tching - I'm aware this could have contributed/caused the problem.

Poor SV. She doesn't get ridden much - my zx has a flat (couple pilot powers should be here mon - yay!) so I've put a couple hundred miles on her the past week. I should either ride the sv more or sell it or something.... the thing is soooo much fun - so small and easy to ride

EDIT:

and I cleaned the dirt off the outside/paint the day I went off roading - the bottom I gave up on - and I've gotta get it all clean before I start going under there

Pour some speedy dry, on the spot of oil, {or unscented cat litter}
use old shoes to rub into the spot,
grind the stuff till it turns to powder,
sweep up, redo this again.

Then; try simple green/ citrus cleaner.
