damned windows update

So, I go to automatic updates from the control panel and it complains that "the Windows update service is not available" Yet the Automatic updates service is running. Why is it complaining and how do I fix it?

Ah HA!!! there is a registry key that disabled it somewhere. Stupid MS registry.
