Actually, Washington was considered quite imposing and somewhat attractive. He was well taller than average. Unfortunately, all his teeth fell out and he went through different versions of very uncomfortable dentures. Which is why you never see a picture of him smiling.

A huge portion of the populace is willing to vote somebody on the most superficial and pointless qualities (looks, campaign trail scandals, things they did when they were 8 years old, drug use, sexuality, "gut" thinking).
