damn win2k thinks I have an AT when I have an ATX and it will not shut down properly

I have an ATX power supply/motherboard. Win2k says my machine is an "AT/AT compatable." When it goes to shutdown, it says it is now safe to turn off the machine. That would be fine if I had an off button but I don't. I need it to shutdown itself like 98. Help?

NozlerAtClemson, don't worry about that "AT/AT COMPATIBLE" line under Computer on the System Properties dialog box. I have an ATX motherboard and power supply that I got in December, and it says the same thing for me.

When I tell Win2K to Shutdown, it does power off the machine. Your Win2K not doing that sounds like you might not be running the ACPI HAL. The first time I tried to install Win2K on this machine, it installed the Standard PC HAL and wouldn't power off the machine after a Shutdown, just like your machine is doing. Go to Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager and then click on the + next to Computer near the top. If it says Standard PC rather than ACPI PC, that's probably why it's not powering down.

Before I reinstalled Win2K, I told the BIOS that I had a Plug and Play OS and turned on Power Management.

If your system is not shutting down and it is in Standard PC mode, go to Power Options in the Control Panel, and check APM, and make sure that APM is enabled in the BIOS.

A BIOS update always helps too.

You DO NOT need the Win2K HAL to be installed in ACPI mode for it to shutdown automatically.

My system is doing the same thing; will not shut down. It is currently operating in "Standard PC" mode because the IRQ routing seems to work best this way. When I go into "Power Options" I do not see any APM box or anything. My BIOS also does not seem to have anything specific regarding APM. Please help. I must be doing something wrong.

Normally you can enable APM in the BIOS by setting Power Management to Enable, or User.

Damn, I feel dumb. I've been running Win2k for over a month, and I just accepted as normal that it would not shut itself off. Thanks guys!
