Damn, why the hell did I do Comp Sci?

My roommate, who just happens to be a little nutty, just reeled in a job that is paying him over 95k a year, plus a discretionary bonus(at a bank in NYC). This guy is about a year and a half older than me, but he holds only a bachelors degree in finance. I, on the other hand, have a masters degree in Computer Engineering, eeking out much less than that.

What did I study my ass off in school for? Going to engineering school when all the hot chicks were elsewhere? Where they got to party every Saturday night? Where the term all nighter involved a keg? To become a code monkey while they make all the money?

Someone here with more than 2 years experience in the Comp Sci field tell me that my prospects will get better. I work at an investment bank too.

you thought you were gonna pull in 100k with comp sci?

Alot of engineering programs are saturated. Too many people going into Comp Sci for sure. Be proud that you have a good degree and start pounding the pavement.

Which one is it cowboy, CE or CS?

He has a degree in CE, but went into CS. He mentioned it in some other thread a while ago.

Anyways, life is unpredictable. It's not like every finance major is working for $95k nor would that opportunity be available to just any finance major.

If he's got a degree in CE and isn't happy with the money with CS related jobs, couldn't he try out jobs geared more toward the engineering aspect of his masters?

right?

right? I started off in CS but I'm lousy at math and almost as bad at programming. I didn't like my business IT major either, but it was at least had a few redeeming classes. I had all but convinced myself that college wasn't for me and that I should just get certifications instead, but I stuck it out another 2 1/2 years and got my most expensive piece of paper yet.

No, I'm not making as much as some of my friends who stayed with CS, but I'm happy in my job, which is worth more than $$.

Yeah lately I've been hearing alot about how these finance majors are making soo much money, they blow girls pants right off. It sucks even more to be a graduating senior in CE with no freaking offers. :frown:

Sometimes I cry. 🙁

I once was majored in Biological Systems Engineering, but I said screw it and majored in Organizational Studies with Emphasis in Business. I am on my way to getting an Accounting degree, and I am not yet in mid 20's and will be making around $80K in a tech bank, which I feel really blessed.

Comp sci once was awesome, but with all the outsourcing, the degree itself is becoming almost worthless 🙁

Apply for finance jobs then. They like engineers. It's not like you're stuck in engineering.

Well, I guess I should clarify. I have a Bachelors in CS, and a Masters in Computer Engineering. In the past I wanted to work for a company like Cray, Sun, IBM or SGI building large distributed systems. That dream died once I hit reality.

I dont like programming. I bear it because it puts food on my table and money in the bank. But considering the relative effort, and the relative amount of work Im left wondering if I might have had a more pleasant job, with an easier degree, making more money.

True, just today I met a guy whos giving up his masters in solid-state devices (EE at UT Austin) for a finance masters at princeton. He says he has high (+100K) hopes when he gets out. Somehow, I believe him.

i-bankers put in like, 80 hours a week... I know someone who just sleeps under their desk at work

all that money and no time to spend it

yea i was also going to say that... lawyers, accountants, etc... they make bank but they work more hours than a normal job

Because just like everyone else, you thought you'd get rich doing it. CS is the MD of the new generation.

thats not impossible.

Sure, they work a lot of hours, but Im not exactly working 40 hours a week myself. working from 8 to 7 isnt too much better. If everyone in NYC works nutty hours, who the hell is shopping? Who the heck are the people on the streets?

My friend just ditched EE for Finance. I dont know how he'll like it since his decisions seems to be base on how much money you make and what others say.
