So, my father in law who has always been a heavy smoker and drinker gets diagnosed with mouth cancer about a month ago and on Monday the 15th has a 10-12 hour surgery involving the loss of a chunk of his tongue, soft palate, and jaw (no bone thankfully) as well as requiring all his teeth to be pulled. For the surgery and at least a few days after he will be breathing and eating through tubes for 4-6 days in ICU then 10-14 days in a cancer center. "Luckily" they are able to graft parts of his forearm to fill in the gaps, but still it's going to require a lot of speech therapy among other therapies to get him back to being able to breathe, eat, drink, and talk without assistance. He's in his 50's btw.
While I'm making arrangements with work to be off the entire week of the 15th - 19th, i get a call on Wed the 10th that my 78yo father who lives by himself had fallen out of bed at ~4am and it was ~9am before he could get to a phone to call for help. He's still in the hospital for dehydration treatment as well as severe muscle strain and now they are saying they will only release him to family care or nursing home care, that they cannot release him to be at home by himself.
merry xmas eh?
ugh... not even merry xmas any more, read to the end if you care
Yet another update...
