So, my father in law who has always been a heavy smoker and drinker gets diagnosed with mouth cancer about a month ago and on Monday the 15th has a 10-12 hour surgery involving the loss of a chunk of his tongue, soft palate, and jaw (no bone thankfully) as well as requiring all his teeth to be pulled. For the surgery and at least a few days after he will be breathing and eating through tubes for 4-6 days in ICU then 10-14 days in a cancer center. "Luckily" they are able to graft parts of his forearm to fill in the gaps, but still it's going to require a lot of speech therapy among other therapies to get him back to being able to breathe, eat, drink, and talk without assistance. He's in his 50's btw.

While I'm making arrangements with work to be off the entire week of the 15th - 19th, i get a call on Wed the 10th that my 78yo father who lives by himself had fallen out of bed at ~4am and it was ~9am before he could get to a phone to call for help. He's still in the hospital for dehydration treatment as well as severe muscle strain and now they are saying they will only release him to family care or nursing home care, that they cannot release him to be at home by himself.

merry xmas eh?

ugh... not even merry xmas any more, read to the end if you care

Yet another update...

Really sorry to hear about that, Joemonkey. :( Keep a good attitude, try to help out your dad and your dad-in-law as best as you and your family are able.

As far as my father in law goes, he's been in surgery for ~7 hours and every update we've had has been favorable. They haven't even had to transfuse any blood yet! Keep the good vibes coming

My father is also gaining strength and seems to be doing much better as well, you wouldn't even know he had pneumonia

a post Christmas update, my father in law is doing GREAT, he is home and should get the traech tube out sometime before the new year. He even drove himself to a gas station this evening to turn in and get more lottery tickets today w/ the traech tube and feeding tube in!

as far as my father goes, he's out of the hospital and in assisted living. People ask me how he's doing and this is my response "well, how would you like it if you realized you fell and couldn't get up, got hurt so bad you had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital, then were told you can't live on your own any more and have to move to this strange place where people are up your ass all the time making sure you are OK? oh yeah, and you're not allowed to drive any more either"

happy holidays *sigh*

Your response to people asking about your dad sucks. At least they care enough to ask.

quick update on all this... my dad is still in assisted living and he really believes he'll get released to self care in the future... we all just nod knowing it isn't going to happen

my father in law seems to be doing very well, but we just found out the cancer spread to more lymphnodes than we thought and he'll have to go through chemo AND radiation therapies to get rid of it all

My father in law's sister (who is mentally retarded w/ a competency of maybe a 4yo at the age of 60) just had a severe UTI that made her spend a few nights in the hospital that turned out surprisingly well

I've had some fucked up skin issues that have resulted in ~80 aluminum discs that test for skin disease/allergy on my back since early Monday, they get taken off tomorrow then read again on Friday to see wtf my problem is

My wife woke up this morning with a pain in her side, she decided to go to the doctor and they found a FUCKING 7cm CYST on her left ovary, so she gets to have surgery on Thursday to get rid of it...

fuck... just fucking fuck...

Dude what the hell? I'm getting depressed just reading your posts....

Anyway, I know it doesn't mean much, but my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sorry to hear about that, but I know what you mean. I've been extremely sick these past several months, been in 2 car accidents (both cars totaled, neither my fault but the insurance won't pay for either), my back is now screwed up so I have to walk with a cane and I just got fired from my job.

What next? :(
