I havent played starcraft in a long time but finally the other day i installed original stacraft and was having a blast. then last night i found my brood war cd and installed that and suddenly i am getting all sorts of problems and crashes.

the worst thing about these crashes is they totally fvck up my system. the most common problem is right when starting a game the screen turns black and stays there indefinitely. the only way i can figure out how to get back to windows is pressing the Windows key + E (bring up windows explorer) and this brings up only the windows task bar (the desktop area remains black) and from the taskbar i can right-click the starcraft icon and say close.

But after doing this, the starcraft process never goes away and then my system becomes a complete wreck. It has these lockups every minute that last for about 10 seconds where even the mouse cursor freezes in place. Also if I try running any new programs like Firefox they show up in process manager but it never actually loads up! it's a complete nightmare... I even once had Process Explorer running before I run starcraft, then when the game crashed and I got back to me desktop using the above method I went into process explorer and tried to kill the starcraft process and not even that did it!

I uninstalled starcraft and reinstalled it and got the same exact results. Originally i had installed SC, then played the game and downloaded patch before installing brood war. the second time i had installed SC and then immeditaly brood war, before trying to log on. Same result both times with random crashes.

does anyone have any idea what to do about this?

oh one more thing, once i end task starcraft and it never goes away, the only way i can reboot is by manually powering off the pc, not with start -> shutdown because then that will hang forever.

cliffs:

1. trying to play starcraft brood war on win xp
2. game crashes randomly
3. i can get back to windows by end tasking but the starcraft process never goes away
4. after end tasking, my system becomes completely unstable
5. cant even reboot normally, have to manually power down

ok thats odd, when i change compatability mode to win 2k or win 98 starcraft can no longer detect the cd in the drive. sigh....

edit: oh wait, stupid me. i had only starcraft installed this time and the brood war cd was in the drive. :)
