Damn what a long process

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. What format are you ripping to?

I'm ripping everything to flac, as well as very small mp3, mp3s for the ipod, flac for everything else

Right now everything is just going to mp3 at 192kbps.

With the price of huge hard drives today, I couldn't justify losing cd quality.

Any particular reason you're using such an antiquated format (not to mention miniscule bitrate)? How much space do you have allotted to this project? What kind of device support do you need?

Also your directory naming/organization scheme could use some more thought, that's going to be awfully cluttered when you have 700 discs ripped.

IMO a project like this is only worth doing if you do it right - high bitrate AAC at the absolute minimum, with lossless (FLAC) preferable. You're going to be kicking yourself in a year when you are re-doing this for better quality.

Or he'd be kicking himself when he needed to put the files onto other devices.
Some people may call mp3 antiquated, I'd call support for it ubiquitous. Hence it is, in its own way, a superior format to all others.

There are dozens of apps that can transcode easily, there is no sense in catering to the lowest common denominator for what amounts to archival storage.

Archive in lossless, transcode for device support.
