Damn... Virus alert again...

So yesterday my mom says she got an email from one of her friends that said "Here's a funny website you should see!" with an attached .dat file. Well, not knowing any better, she clicked it and nothing happened. She told me later, and then later that night I found out what it was. Name is the "Klez E Virus" and apparently it's pretty new. It basically got into a couple dozen .exe files and caused the computer to run at about 1/10 the speed, crash a lot, delete random files, etc. The kicker is that it deletes any anti-virus programs that try to execute. After about 2 hours of editing the registry in safe mode, I finally was able to run AVG anti-virus....seems to be ok now.. pretty F-ing annoying. :|

I had to research this nasty bug last week at work.

Its not new, its from October of last year. For some reason it's circulation is on the rise.

It sends mail like a Mofo, and spoofs the From field with addresses from your outlook address book.

Whack your mom up side the head for opening an attachment that she didn't know what it was. Not belittlilng your mom in particular, but most viruses are spread by uninformed/ignorant people opening attachments and files that they should be automatically deleting.

Yeah, some idiot who had the address of protist@microsoft.com or something sent me an email like that. Of course Norton Internet Securities and Antivirus 2002 caught it before I even recieved it and had a chance to open it.. The thing is, when you click on the message it asks you if you want to save the .dat file. You don't even have to click the attachment, just open up the damn email. Of course I deleted the message, quantined (or whatever) the virus then deleted it.. Then I ran a full system scan, everything checked out and there has been no suggestions that a virus is on my computer..

For some reason, these people who keep it alive think its funny when they infect a friends or some else?s computer. I'm mostly talking about IRC and DCC's. But if you don?t have an AV and you download from a place like that, then you deserve it.

I went out of town last Monday and Tuesday on a business trip. I get back to work on Wednesday and every computer at work that is used for email is infected with that freakin' virus. I spent 3 hrs cleaning computers. Part of that time was spent of the phone with one of our salesmen who thinks I should be able to tell him the magic word to heal his computer. Blah, blah, blah. I'm sure ya'll have heard this crap before.

I work for a Japan based company with worldwide affiliates. I work for the US branch. This virus has completely infected the asain networks and has moved into the US and European networks.

Note. I am not a professional. What I know about computers, I have either taught myself or learned from these forums.
