I felt the air it was pumping out the back of the slot and it was like a blow-heater. I was trying out farcry on max settings, :) runs like a dream. Anyone else felt the heat these babys give off?

They get toasty for sure.. Never have had one lock up though..

That being said, run as hot as you want..

After I put my V1 Ultra on my card (see project log link for details), it runs nice and cool. I don't break 53C anymore.

I wonder when a company is going to make an efficient heatsink that connects to the outside allowing you to make coffee. Just think how it would help lan parties!

I just sold my two 256MB 7800GTX's that are in my second rig so I can go out and pick up a X1900XTX. Now first what do you mean these cards run hot? My 7800GTX's with ACS3 cooling would hit around 72C on full load and that was the top card when being run in SLI. Do these cards get even hotter then that? Also, will I see a big downgrade in performance with this transfer I am doing?

thanks.

Well, we mean hot :D I was just reading some commentary by Viper John about a X1900XT CF edition that he tweaked for someone. He measured its power draw and core heat dissipation.

Under load - Draw: 194 watts, core heat dump: > 160 watts :Q

OK, he had OCed the holy living crap out of the card - but a stock card will dump over 100 watts @ load easy :) That's pretty hot.

They run hot.... simple as that, graphics cards typically run hot though, its just the air being blown out the back of my case was similar to that from a fan heater. You wont see a downgrade in performance, i think you will see a difference, and a definate difference in power usage, idle this card uses around 40 watts, under full 3d load it uses 110 odd watts, this is dependant on which manufacturer you buy from and whether or not its overclocked.

But one X1900XTX shouldn't draw more power then my two 256 7800GTX's right? I mean I want to be sure that my 500W is sufficient to remain in my second rig, once i get the X1900XTX. I am only asking because Soviet said I will definitely see a difference in power usage etc...

Odd that we slam the prescot line for running hot, yet we don't really care so much for ATI's X1900 line...

Good point! I guess the main difference to people is that the Presshot, I mean prescott, runs really hot but doesn't have much of a performance gain over it's AMD counterpart. Where the X1900 runs hot, but atleast it has the performance to back it up. I think that's the only difference, atleast to me mate.

Anyone got any help with my question earlier?

I just hope I dont see a decrease in performance when I get my X1900XTX inside my second rig. Well less performance compared to whats in there now (2 EVGA 256 7800GTX's w/ACS3 cooling)...

hahaha...i think gtx sli WILL outperform a single xtx in many situation

read the other reviews, i think even anandtech has it

i don't see why you'd upgrade from a pair of gtx?!

unless of course you're looking into better image quality and hdr+aa

or

maybe you're looking for less heat and power consumption??

That, and most video cards run pretty hot. The X1900XT is not exactly ridiculous in terms of heat output when compared to a 7800GTX (the X1900XTX takes a jump up, probably due to an increased core voltage).

Anyone got any help with my question earlier?

You can find power usage numbers around -- but most of them measure at the wall, which doesn't take the PSU's efficiency into account. In any case, it seems like an X1900XTX uses somewhere in the neighborhood of 130-150W, and a single 7800GTX is in the 100-watt range (with the 7800GTX "Ultra" 512MB more like 120W). So I would say a single X1900XTX should be less power draw than two 7800GTX cards.

I believe the gtx in SLI did outperform the x1900xtx in most cases, but if you want to get the most out of those old cards pricewise you should sell now.

Also, your 500 watt will be fine for your x1900xtx.

The reason I wanted to get rid of these two 256MB 7800's is because I am really getting tired of dealing with SLI and SLI profiles with both of my rigs. I am for sure keeping everything thats in my first rig, but I want to get a new GPU in my second rig. I mean COD2 is a bit laggy on my second rig for some odd reason...On my first one its perfectly smooth at higher settings. I see benchmarks showing that the X1900XTX is a monster when it comes to shader heavy games and to be honest, I think games are going to get more and more shader heavy.

I am not looking for less heat really, but less power maybe...I feel really weird trying to overclock my second rig more then it is, because I am afraid of my power supply going BOOM!

Do you guys really think I shouldn't upgrade? I mean, I really am not happy with the performance from my second rig, yeah its good, but not as smooth as i like. My first rig, i am satisfied with, thats why im leaving it alone. I just don't like how SLI really only gives me 20-25% improvement, for the hasssle, at times it's really not worth it. lol

I also see in the Anandtech debut, that the X1900XTX outperforms a 7900GTX. So that is making me want to upgrade too...What do you blokes think?
