Damn Shoulder Injury!!

I'll be 50 in a few months. No biggie, as far as I'm concerned. I've always been lean and in decent shape. I'm at the gym four to five times a week. About two months ago my left shoulder began hurting, and the pain gradually grew worse. Lots of pinging and popping.
A trip to the ortho confirmed what I already knew. Tendinitis. Did the rest and 800mg ibuprofen routine. Didn't help. Pain is still with me. Tried working out again but the pain is just too much now. I've shut it down for three weeks with no seeming improvement. Frustration has set in. Two days ago I had a cortisone injection into the joint. Little improvement. Should the cortisone have an immediate effect, or will I begin to notice improvement in a few days?
The good doc says if the cortisone shot doesn't get me back on track, next is an MRI followed by surgery, depending upon what it reveals. Sucks! Anyone with tendinitis and impingement syndrome who can share some words of wisdom for this apparently aging warrior? Is there a doctor in the house? Should I stop exercising altogether, hang in front of my PC and nef ATOT all day long? Is this my future??

It sucks getting older. Still thinking like a 20 year old, but the body doesn't respond the same. 😛 I've had severe pain in my right shoulder for many years that even cortisone didn't help. I never bothered to go the MRI route, though. I just do what I can with the pain.

Hope you get better without surgery, cause surgery of any kind blows humongous chunks. :Q

Believe me, surgery is my last choice in all of this. We're still waiting on the cortisone treatment, and additional rest. I'm just gettin' bitchy with three weeks out of the gym and very possibly another three or four while waiting for the inflammation to subside. If, after doing all that, the problem rears its ugly head once again, I'm goin' under the scope to be done with it. And that means another two months of recovery. Sheesh! I was back in action a week after I had my vasectomy!

If it's rotator cuff, it can certainly be fixed. I had my right shoulder done a few years ago. I thought it was due to a tear from an injury, but now I'm not so sure. The surgeon told me he found "fraying", and cleaned that up, but no real tear to speak of. Now, I'm having the exact same problem in my left shoulder. The surgery and follow up therapy worked perfectly, so I'm not worried that the left shoulder can't be put back in good condition. All it takes is money!

I just started doing Cable Flys and my shoulders have been killing me. Aleeve is now my friend🙂

It's a bitch getting older (turning 50 next week) but I am going to be damned if I am going to age gracefully!

So far, Doc B. suspects tendinitis. But, he also said if the cortisone treatment is ineffective, this could indicate something else. Rotator cuff being one possibility. And so far the cortisone hasn't done much more for me than some ibuprofen. Hmm....wonder if my pitching career is over?

Yeah, I hear ya. Been doing the ibuprofen routine on and off, but that's not the cure, of course. I want my joints back!

The Big 50! Congrats! I'll be hitting that milestone in October. Here's to being young and hung at 50  !

Sure, you would be too if your diapers hadn't been changed!
Now, if you'll excuse me while I go scrub my dentures and drink my Geritol/Prune cocktail. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Not as bitchy as some 20 somehing year old guy who is soft and pudgy!

Grisle bitch, hard to chew and even tougher to swallow!!!!

Hey i did the same thing. Im 21 which sux too
I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and lift a good amount on bench. One bench though and this horrible pain cam in my should. Couldnt sleep on it for months or raise it for a while. Docter said i had arthritis. Well a couple months later i went to the gym again and bam. On incline, my should almost felt like it was on the verge or popping outta the socket. Sometimes it locks on on me still and clicks. Im back in the gym now with no problems but its scary. I always have a spotter for even warmup now

That was supposed to offend me? 😛

I've had Tendinitis for years, it does indeed suck.

They a few years ago I tore something in my right shoulder, it's NOT healing and I have no health insurance. Now THAT suck!!

Plus I already hit 50 THAT SUCKS TOO. 🙁

Beats the alternative though I suppose. 😉

Not really😉

Chasing grandkids can help prevent such a situation.

Same age as the rest of the old fogies here, but have not had these symptoms yet (knock on wood)

Cranky - yes, stiff - yes, creaks - no 😀

Military Press tears up my sholders, mainly because I lift the bar off the rack without a spot. Tore it up pretty good about a month ago, switched to a dumbell press and everything is flying along great now.

I messed up my shoulder pretty bad one time when some kids ran unattended in the gym and nailed my bar while doing squats. In hindsight I should have just let the weights crash onto them, they caused a second injury later on before being 'banned' which was the rules to begin with...

I never got cortisone, but I was prescribed ibuprofin at first, then sodium naproxin (Alleve), but when he finally gave me muscle relaxers I was good within a week or two.

Maybe try that first. You may have to reorganize your life a bit for the time you are on the relaxers as it pretty much doped me out (I was in school so I'd just drive to campus and take my dose, then sleep or whatever through the day 🙂 )..some days were worse than others.

Nah, no muscle relaxers for me. I've been on the conservative side when it comes to taking meds. (Well, not always......I was twenty once, you know).
If the pain persists at its present level, I'll go for the MRI and narrow down the problem and decide for certain if surgery is in my best interests. I may just live with the annoyance and chalk it up to the normal ebb and flow of life.
Worked out today and I was a little sore. Took it very easy, though, and just wanted to test the shoulder after the cortisone. Got an ice pack on it now and it isn't so bad.
