Damn Router keeps dropping ALL connections!!

I just got this Netgear FVS318 Router for my home lan to connect out to my cable modem.

Installation was very simple and straightforward. But every 3 minutes it literally dies for 2 minutes and wipes out my whole LAN with every connection. When I say it dies...the lights on the router are still on and everything looks okay on it but my everything from my IM to FTP to even a connection to the router DIES....


Any idea why it might be doing this?? I have emailed Netgear support but still waiting for them to get back to me.

So far this is the biggest POS I have ever come across....I have never heard of a router doing this.

I've never heard of a router doing that either. This will sound stupid but have you tried resetting your router? And does your network go down or your internet connection go down or both?

Yeah, I've tried resetting it and turning it on and off.

And only my network on the router goes down....my actually internet connection is always fine.

It's the weirdest thing....I'm thinking maybe I have a defective router or something.

What client hardware (NICS, attached switch's) that might be causing a problem? I have a FVS318 router at work and it's been going 24/7 with six clients for a little under a year with no reboots (except when I forget the Admin Password ).

I only have two computers hooked up to it on the LAN.

One is a WinXP box with a Broadcom 5702 10/100/1000MB that is Native to the Abit motherboard.

The other is a Win2000 Laptop with an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE.

Both these computers work fine everywhere else and fine before I put this router in.

The Router is also connected to the CableModem that Comcast gives out for their internet access. I've had no complaints with this service and I've almost never had a dropped connection from their side.

In addition, even if the cable modem service went down(which it doesn't) I should still be able to communicate with the router itself and the computers on it's subnet.

Like I said, everythign was fine until I put this router in. It works intermittinly between playing dead and dropping out.

The only other thing I can suggest is possibly getting an exchange for that router. If that doesn't work, see if there's a firmware upgrade. Other than that I'm all out of ideas, sorry
