I was setting up my new Shuttle SN45G system on the side at work when I realized that I left my XP Pro CD at home. Not a problem, I'd simply borrow the disc from the office and install with my key (Which is saved on my laptop). I went through the entire installation process only to discover that it will not take my XP Pro key because it is an MSDN version. My key is not a manufacturer-specific OEM key! Now everyone has gone home and I'm up the creek. This is not the first time something like this has happened to me... At the computer shop, we encountered something like three different standard OEM Windows 98 non-SE discs that took their own set of keys! That made for some really annoying situations where we had just grabbbed whatever CD was around to use with a customer's non-specific OEM key (Not tied to one OEM) only to find out that it will not work. How can I avoid such time-wasters in the future?
I need a FAQ that will totally break it down for me. What versions are compatible with what keys and how I can tell them apart. Does something like this exist somewhere? You;d think Microsoft would make this information available. This will be immensely valuable information to add to my toolkit (With which I'd be fine if I hadn't left it at home 😉).
