<rant mode>
To make a long story short, a pretty severe thunderstorm rolled by yesterday(Thursday) evening, with a bolt coming down about 5ft from my Uni-provided duplex. While the tornado missed us by 15 miles or so, the casualty list from the lightning included: the fire alarms for 3 duplexes(mine included), the ResNet connection for those 3 duplexes, 7 breakers(just tripped), my cable outlet, and about 2 hours worth of code in Notepad(breaker tripping shut off computer). While our Plant department was quick to respond, they only did what was absolutely necessary, which was to shut off the malfunctioning fire alarms, and install battery operated smoke detectors so that they weren't in violation of the building code. After that however, they left, and all the staff got today off for Reagan's funeral(research students excluded, of course).
So now I'm 'netless until at least Monday, without cable TV until who-knows-when, and the duplex will likely go up in flames this weekend.😛 There goes my plan of minimizing office time next week.:| Moral of the story: lightning is bad, and the mid-west(studying in Indiana) sucks.
