Damn Jiffy Lube

Argg the morons at Jiffy lube put 10w40 oil in my Civic... it's supposed to have 5w20 (from the owners manual).

They charged me extra, but I argued and got the price dropped since they screwed up.

Will my car be ok with this stuff in it? Will it cause any damage if I run it for 3000 miles with 10w40?

Why not just have them drain it again and put the right oil in?

Well, at least the oil stayed in the car 😛. Last year my dad went to get the oil changed on his new Silverado. Went out and started driving to work the next day, and noticed that his oil pressure dropped to 0 as he started to pull out of an intersection...turns out that the oil filter had blown off and all the oil drained out.

Fortunately, he was right next to another oil-change place (a jiffylube, iirc), so he rolled the truck in there to look at it and see what happened. As he was looking around, someone pulled up behind him and handed him his oil filter - the guy had found it out in the intersection. Turns out that the place where he originally got it changed had somehow managed to cram the oil filter for some little foriegn car onto the Silverado; the thing held for 24 hours until he went to pull out of the intersection. Needless to say, my dad was pissed. He went and argued with the station owner until the guy paid for his second oil change, and got them to pay to test the new oil to make sure that his engine hadn't been damaged as a result of what happened. He wanted them to replace the engine if it had; but it had only run for a few minutes with no oil and no permanent damage had occured.

Actually, with the summer months coming up, the heavier oil is a little better anyway. The thinner oil in the 95 degree heat you'll be having for the next 5 months wouldn't harm it, but the heavier viscosity won't hurt.

Don't make a big deal of nothing.

Or just plain stupidity. The shop he went to first was some little locally-owned place, where they hire highschool kids to do most of the work - apparently whether they're mechanics or not. I knew one kid who worked there; his previous job was as a cashier in the same store I worked in 😛

To top things off, the guy who handed my dad his oil filter was the manager for the Jiffy Lube in who's parking lot he was now sitting. So the guy knew what he was looking at and knew exactly what had happened.

Oil change places are like most fast food joints. They are only as good as the people running them. If they are morons and don't care, then you get crappy service and lazy techs.
