The car is a 1993 Mazda 626...not that it matters too much other than it's old. Everything looks ok. I can work the latch by hand but it won't catch properly when I close the trunk. Any ideas on what I can do? or should I just take it to a mechanic or a body shop. I would have pics to explain but I don't have a camera here at work.

I have a 1997 Mazda 626. Just had a look in my trunk. Do you have an interior release for the trunk? Does that work? There's a little latch release on mine right at the latch. It's a toggle, and mechanical. You push it down to negate the functionality of the interior release. Does the key in the lock seem to function....HTF.

Yeah, all of that stuff works. The toggle enables/disables the interior release. The key causes the latch to move properly...I'm getting the car looked at during lunch, but I bet it's going to be something really dumb and simple and cost me too much :(

Hmmm, haven't cleaned with carb cleaner, but I did try de-icing it (was cold this morning) then spraying some lithium (I think that's what it is, white lube type stuff) grease on it.
