Damn it! I'm busted at work tomorrow!

I started a workstation installation on Friday before I went home, and my boss told me to finish it over the weekend when I came in. Well, I TOTOALLY FORGOT!!! I sent in an email to my manager today (it's my day off) saying I forgot and I was sorry, then he replies back that he got reprimanded by the boss for it not being done. My manager then emails me back mad about me forgetting, then saying he hopes he doesn't have to regret moving me to his new department.

Ughhh.....I got a pit in my stomach 🙁

why did you not go in today??? sure it was your day off, but you had a responsibility you should have gone in today the moment you remembered it.

Apologize profusely, and tell him it won't happen again. Make sure you have something to substantiate why it won't happen again, like, you'll be using a PDA from now on to ensure you never miss a deadline again.

I would have but I didn't remember until like 4:00. Someone else would have did it by then 🙁

Yeah, but it would have shown your effort to resolve the problem.

Everybody makes mistakes, its how you fix them and own up to them thats important.

Just make sure you don't blame anything - just simply say "I'm sorry. It was my mistake and it won't happen again"

Would have or did?

#1: It was only a workstation. I could see if it was a server installation/configuration that the developers were waiting on to install their applications on.

#2: If your boss and your boss' boss get so worked up over such a small item, it seems like there must be lots of anxiety for the members in your group. Clearly, the managers need to understand that people are only human. Sometimes we forget, sometimes we make mistakes.

When you were in over the weekend, was all of your time utilized on other tasks? If so, and they were of higher priority, you could simply explain to your boss that while the workstation installation was over-looked, you felt that it was best to keep your focus on the items of higher priority.

Finally, if you seem to be a forgetful person, you might look into a Palm Pilot or other hand-held organizer. You could construct "To-do" lists that you could have loaded on the device and also on your PC to ensure you don't overlook such tasks in the future.

Best of luck to you. 🙂

How about this:

you post your Boss' email, and we all write a note to him expressing how sorry you seem to be to us.

That should work.

The owner of the company is the most anal retentive person you would ever meet. I mean, he needs medication! He once walked by a bookcase in my office, stopped, took all the books off the shelf, the rearranged them from smallest to largest. He then stood back and said "There...that's better!" and walked off. He does stuff like that all the time. He checks the facts of everything you say, he cross examines everything....ugh! Stressful. Anyway, it's a small thing and it's going to be a big deal. Especially since it's for a new employee and I'm sure they wanted to make a good impression on her. I normally have a to-do list, but I forgot to add this to it since it's not something I normally do.

Drat.

Whew---didn't get into much trouble. Just got a "Try to do better next time." I guess he saw my workload over the weekend and let it slide. I'm sure it'll still come up as a gotcha in my monthly evaluation though.

That's not anal retentive, that's obsessive-compulsive.

..which explains the need for medication.
