Ok. I built a new comp in early january consisting of Asus A7N8X Dlx and XP 2100+ processor, one of the 0248 TBredB's. All was going excellent(200*12 24 Hrs prime stable, 45 degrees reported MBM temp on diode with TT Smartfan II at barely audible speeds) Then one day, had been benching for a bit. Was gonna take my comp and run some files to my sisters that I had just finished for her, MOBO died of the save and exit death. Couldn't fix, so I sent it back.
When I got my new one from asus, comp wouldn't boot, tested parts and found CPU dead, no idea how, no marks, bent pens, places of any kind on core...the damn thing looked brand spanking new after I cleaned the AS3 off of the die. So I tried a friends 1600, which worked(didn't in the last mobo, was confirmed dead by asus). It was running at very similar temps for the week and a half it took to get my 2100 replaced, though I wasn't pushing it quite as hard since it wasn't mine. Anyways, then I get an 0249 from back from newegg, which I thought was odd since this was when I was hearing 0304's, 0306's and such.
My first thought was refurb, but anyways, threw it in my comp, and at default voltage was running like 43 idle, 48-50 under prime, at 1.6V. When I OC'ed later in the week, at one time before I saw it and stopped prime, the CPU hit 63 degrees, reading from MBM, with *fairly* similar temps in Asus Probe. Now, it was totally prime stable all this time, just hotter than hell. I know it isn't my inexperience, or my case, or my cooler. I put the SLK-800 that I have on my first 2100 at least twice, on the 1600 twice, and they both worked wonderfully. I also reseated twice on this chip, completely cleaning and reapplying AS3 each time. Case temps, even with it hot in my dorm room are still running right around 30ish, the damn CPU is just smoking.
I called Newegg, told them I suspected that this was a refurb and was returned cause it was running hot or something, and he denied everything, said he pulled up my order and had calls made, and the cpu was definitely a new one. Oh, BTW, I also updated BIOS from like the 1002.003 to the 1002.A during this time, but I am not sure why that would make MBM change all of a sudden. Anyways, any advice, suggestions would be extremely welcome, thanks guys(and gals) for reading this long post.
