Hahaha, this thread totally reminded me of an ex g/f... She was all into the '60s. She wanted to live in the '60s.

Her: "OMG, I wish it was the '60s. That would be sooo cool."
Me: *sigh* "The '60s were about three things: sex, drugs, and rock and roll. YOU LIKE NONE OF THOSE THINGS."

I was promptly slapped.

Or what about the 50s? You don't HAVE to go to the Army in America, right'
They were pretty good, too.
If you were drafted, you had to go into the Army unless you fled to Canada or someplace else outside the US.

So the Army is only a MUST if America is on war, right?

no, its never been required of all citizens of a certain age to join

I mean like, if it's war and you're older then 18, chances are that you get drafted, right?

not particularly... only been a couple wars where the draft was really needed, that was the civil war and vietnam... i wonder what percent of the able bodied 18 year old males were actually drafted, i doubt its over 25%
I do believe that the draft was also reinstituted just before WWII.

Beware of nostalgia. The good old days were not that good.

It was much better in the late 70's early 80's and the latter part of the 90's.

Lets see:

No money- Clerk in Supermarket 39 hours a week (so they didnt have to pay you full time and give benies)

4 years in the service

1st job-worked 6 12 hour days per week and changed shifts every 2 weeks.

Great cars and music though if you could take advantage of them. At least most people were in the same boat so it wasnt nearly as bad as being without today.

80s and 90s def better.

I didn't live in the 60s, but I know that life is always the same - 500, 600 years ago or in the future, I think. Basic and most important things stay the same, only decorations change. I'm sure a prehistoric knight or someone riding an expensive Arab horse wasn't less happy than a present day successful person driving a beamer.

LOTS of things were nice but judged a little differently from today. All here from late 50s to mid 60s.

Drugs were mostly non existant except for booze or a little grass if you were really connected.

No or few Air Conditioned places including homes and cars so a cool night was appreciated.

The Lake (or beach) also.

The real hoods in school wore T-shirts and (gasp) Levis.

Girls were a lot more mysterious and usually more fun.

People dressed nicely if they went to restaurants or movies and they were even quiet there so you could hear!!!

Music was great until the Beatles killed a lot of it. They gave us other forms though so it evened out a litlle.

Cars were great and gas cheap but you were lucky to have oneless than 4 years old. Tires were only good for about 10K miles.

Oh, Yeah. Not everyone had telephones yet. At least no idiots on cells so an improvement there.

Tried to stay on good things here but there was also segregation just ending at least in legal circles.

Boy, I really sound like an OLd Fart now!! Good and bad always exist side by side so it is up to you to pick and choose. Personally, I wouldnt want to go back except to be in my 20s again and try to do a little better.

I was in grade school/jr high in the sixties. We had air raid drills in school instead of drive by drills. There was racial tension.
Lots of long hair (mine went past my shoulder blades), bell bottoms and 501's with studs in them.
Gas was $.28 a gallon and a loaf of day old bread to feed the ducks was $.05. IIRC, a candy bar was $.10.
Most importantly, there was no rap music.

That's debatable about rap music ;)

No we had James Brown which is a definate improvement over rap.

Back thewn we were at war for political and economic reasons, the government lied to us constantly, drug use was rampant and the fashion styles were ridiculous..kind of like today.
