I got in this morning, and everything in the shop was crashed. All the Windows boxes, both crack racks, the backup server, everything - except the server!

Apparently, there was a power outage some time last night.:( But, the little UPS did it's job, and the server just purred right along!:D

I got an APC UPS for each of the new Compaq desktops at work, we are always having brownouts and even momentary power losses, lost several PCs that way. So when we got the new PIII 733s I made sure we protected the investment. Gotta keep those cows munching :)

Still can't convince some people not to turn them off at night though. :|

Now to get the rest of the herd on UPS eh Russ? ;)

Guess you'll be busy kick starting all those Klinux machines. ;)

I've always been a big believer in UPS's. I've got four of 'em myself and keep thinking I need more. Maybe one nice big Matrix UPS and a diesel electric gen set outside just in case! :p

/me is starting to sound like those crackpot survivalists/cultists in Montana.

I'm runnig my 4 node "Rack" off one 400v APC UPS.

I thought for sure the warning buzzer would go off when that last board fired up, but it didn't. :D

Check it out.

Dennis,

Can't you implement a password needed to turn them off? Or an exit screen that, instead of saying "It is now safe to turn off your computer" says "If you turn me this computer off, I'll kill you". ;)

The company i work for makes many of the microcontrollers and mosfets in APC equipment so I may be biased. What the hell, APC is the best. They have saved my ass on numerous occasions. Can't wait for the discount program to kick off so I can get discount APC stuff.

Maybe I can get Russ a nice Symettra or Silcon unit. :)

I've got 4, 600-700W capable UPSes (Tripplites and IBMs) and am damn sure glad I have them. I have had enough brownouts happen around here recently... :(

Nice to have boxen with 200+ day uptimes though. :D

How do you guys determine how many VA is too much? :) I'm going to buy a UPS for college next year, and I'm not sure how big to get. I'll be getting atleast a 500VA, and I'm not sure if I should go to APC's auction site and get a 650VA, or even larger one. I want the UPS to run my computer, monitor (17") and inkjet printer incase the power dies when I'm writing a report or something similar.

The APC refurb auction site is amazing sometimes...a few months ago I saw about a 1000VA UPS for only $150 or so. I wanted to buy it...30 mins uptime would be nice. :D
