Damn, how does one stop that awful countdown the Blaster virus infects you with?

My friends PC is really messed up, and I've had him download a Nortan tool that detects and removes it, as well as the Windows Update security patch. Problem is, his computer has this crazy countdown that always gets to zero before any of the applications can work. How can this countdown be stopped?

i think that aborts it (use the start>run ...)

use c: and I think its actually "shutdown -a" without quotes instead of the /a
