Damn hookah not working well...

Just recently our hookah has been acting up....the smoke it produces tastes like absolute sh*t. We cleaned every part as best we could, and while there is still a past-smoke smell in the water chamber...it is not enough to make the smoke taste this bad. We are using the same shisha we have been using for a month now...the only change is the coals...and even so, we don't believe there is a way that standardized coals would be causing it.

The main problem is that the smoke just tastes....bad. Its not a burning taste, it is simply a taste that no one wants in their mouths....can't even explain it.

Anything we should check out? Any shisha/coal combos work out well for anyone specifically?

coals can make the difference in the taste. we tried self light cheaper coals once and they tasted like ass. i only buy the golden coals now. also, make sure the coal is completely lit before putting it on the hookah.
