The National Annenberg Election Survey found that 51 percent of adults age 18 to 29 believe Bush wants to reinstate the draft. Eight percent said Kerry supports bring back the draft, and 7 percent said both want to. A fourth of those polled said neither candidate favors the idea.
Bush is definitely a tool and his Messopotamia will definitely cause a shuffling of US forces globally . . . but I don't think he WANTS a draft. A draft may become necessary in the future but who would want a draft?

when ur recalling 61-year old reservists, its pretty clear we have a troop shortage. when multiple soldiers come forward saying their commanding officers are threatening to send them to iraq if they don't sign up for another service term...

it could be that those polled didn't understand the question and thought they were being asked if bush would HAVE to reinstate some sort of draft, rather than "want to"

but do we really know what Bush wants? if we give him 4 more years of unaccountability, then it maybe 4 more wars.

maybe he wants to bring it back so rich folks kids can have fun dodging it.

I won't disagree with you. I won't flip-flop. Most Americans are ignorant. That said, I don't think this is that unreasonable. We've all heard how people are getting called up after being promised to let go. Also, imagine if we had to fight another war? Also, in vietnam a similar war we had a draft. Again, I don't disagree that these polls show only one thing: that Americans are consistently wrong.

I'd like to know that statistics of the number of soldiers that they've lost due to a major injury.

From here, question was
Who favors reinstating the military draft -- George W. Bush, John Kerry, both or neither?

We know what Saddam wanted, so we should be able to tell what Bush wants too.

Less than 2000? I'd like to know what percentage that is, and see a comparison to the percentage of normal deaths over that time period.

It is amazing isnt it? The most amazing part is the democrats are the ones who actually created the legislation to do such a thing.

I certainly agree with everything you said . . . but I don't care how you frame the question . . . it's hard to believe anyone really wants to reinstate the draft. Obviously, the IRR and various stop loss orders are essentially a draft but I doubt most people that answered the poll know about those mechanisms.

Congrats howie and the dems - your FUD campaign worked. Ofcourse Bush has stated in no uncertain terms that there will NOT be a draft so long as he is the President.

Which number is higher, the percentage of people that think Bush will institute a draft, or the percentage of people that think Saddam was involved in 9/11?

"The Army decides on a case-by-case basis whether a wounded soldier is physically and emotionally healthy enough to return to combat, he said. Of the 8,117 troops listed as injured by the Department of Defense through Thursday morning, 3,670 returned to duty - and 4,447 did not"

So dmcparanoia, you're proud to be voting for a candidate who bases his campaign on FUD?

I thought you were against FUD, that's why you hate Bush/Cheney. So instead you're voting for... more FUD?

How does that make sense?

As a person of draft age, this is what has me worried. No one really likes the idea of a draft, it's basically political suicide, but between our current engagements, possible threats in the future(NK, Iran, etc), and the constant ramblings of the old kooks saying that mandatory military service would "teach those kids some respect"(or some idea thereof), I'm honestly concerned a draft may be in our future if things lean towards the worst-case. The military can't be spread too much more(they've already taken a large portion of the Oregon reservists, among other things), and unless there's a Pearl Harbor of our generation, I'm doubtful enrollments will meet needs if we get in another conflict. :Q

I've heard of pushes from some Democratic/liberal groups to post flyers at college campuses warning of a draft if Bush is re-elected. Fear-mongering is all it is.

First, I don't know if there will be a draft and I am too old to be of draft age, but GWB has already said this war on terror will be an unending war with limitless, ill-defined enemies. The military is not meeting its quota for recruiting. We are stretched too thin with most of the troops either in Iraq, going to Iraq or having come back from Iraq. I've already linked news stories showing that they are reforming the draft boards. If there is a draft, they will not call it a draft. They will call it national service or some other name. You never know.

Yup, no one wants the Draft, but if Iraq carries on too long they may not have a choice.

I'm sure most of you aren't sheepish enough to believe the poll question anyway but just in case:
"We're not going to have a draft, period," Bush said in the second of three debates in the campaign for the White House.

"An all-volunteer army is best suited to fight the new wars of the 21st century," Bush said. "We don't need mass armies anymore."
