We put it all back together and the best we've gotten out of it is a crappy rough running engine that dies when I take my foot off the gas. I know the timing's not right, but we've tried every different place possible for timing, and that's as good as we've gotten it. I don't know what's wrong w/ it. It's really annoying.

<== not good with car engines at all. Currently talking out of ass.

Good luck man.

Firing order
Distributor placement...make sure it's not 180 degrees out, or not a tooth out.
Also, if the timing chain was on the virge of too much stretch, it may be there now.

Be sure all the right wires are going to the right places (cap/Plugs)

Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. Did you forget to plug in a hose?

The firing order is correct, the distributor is most likely not aligned right, but we've tried it in about a billion different places and can't get it to run any better. I have no reason to think the timing chain would die due to a head gasket replacement, but I guess it's a possibility. I don't think there are any vacuum leaks, but it wil lbe checked (along with ALL other connections) tomorrow.

Did you use the classic 302 firing order, or the 351W firing order? (Should be 351W)

Edit: Do you think you might be a tooth off on the distributor? Oh... and the timing chain's probably just fine (unless you've got a LOT of miles on the engine, in which case you'll get too much slack..)

My money is on a rather large vacuum leak. Try to keep it running by spraying carb cleaner in the intake with the throttle closed.

I would suggest that you make sure:

*#1 plug is firing when it is supposed to.

*you have unobstructed fuel flow.

then, if all that is OK, maybe you have an air/vacuum problem. It is real easy to have a leak around the intake manifold when changing heads.

Valve Adjustment

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Those of you with Ford, and other engines with "Non-Adjustable" valvetrain ... YOU MUST verify that your machinist did his job correctly when setting the valve stem heights, and then YOU must also verify proper pintle depth when using Hydraulic lifters. If you switch to solid lifters it is nearly mandatory that you convert to adjustable valvetrain (I'd say this is mandatory in all RACING applications as well as any application where you want to actually have control of your valve lash setting).

What is the year make model and engine?

What have you done to it, why did you do it, and what was your goal?
