people still rent from blockbuster?!! I made that mistake once... $5 fvcking dollars to rent Cujo on dvd?! I could have bought the god damn movie for that much. it wasn't even a special edition with extras or anything.

but you know what? It's not blockbusters fault for trying to gouge people, it's the people's fault for letting themselves be gouged.

Sucks for me, turns out this No Late Fees arrangement is ONLY available at Blockbuster corporate stores, not any franchise locations. Spoke to the manager at my local BB and it turns out nearly 1/3 - 1/2 of all BB stores are not corporately owned and the only way to find out which is which is by asking.

Whatta load of advertising crap!

YOU are angry because YOU failed to ask someone at the store about this?

This is why we have so many "victims" in america. No one bothers to RESEARCH anything, or ask simple questions. Blockbuster cannot make the franchisees promote this offer, as I believe iit would be illegal. I mean, c'mon, you never even stopped to consider that your local BB might be a franchise?

Why would Joe everyday consumer research whether or not blockbuster has no more late fees when that stupid commercial is on every commercial break? Isn't it reasonable to assume that they mean all Blockbusters? How the fck are people supposed to know that BB has both corporate locations and franchises to begin with?

strange its 30 for 2 movies at your location? its 30 for 3 movies for me. its more than netflix but since blockbuster is so close its down a hill its beats waiting a day. great way to exercise too, walk down hill jog back up

I rented 136 movies in one month from Hollywood Video for $10 a month (first three months). Thats the record at the store I go to. Don't think it'll ever be beat either.

So you spent about 280 hrs or 1/3 of the month watching movies. That is sad.

i'd agree with you on this in most cases, but not in this one. what percentage of people actually thought that it might not apply to their local blockbuster?

Same rule applies thing when McDonalds advertise certain sandwiches for $1.
Not all McDonalds will sell those sandwiches for $1.
So you get mad too when certain McDonalds don't sell them for $1.

Just because you see something advertise on TV, it doesn't mean they're all true.
So next thing you're going to tell me you believe everything you see advertise on TV ??

The rule of thumb here is ASK ??
Was it too hard to call up your local BB and ask ??
There's a difference when you see the McDonald's price on the menu in the store.

Either those movies were burned or he copied them to his HD for later viewing.

The Blockbuster thing is a joke. You know everyone is thinking "NO LATE FEES? That's great!". Just wait until they get a bill for the movie they kept out too long.

Get your facts straight before whining people. If you keep it too long you are charged for the price of the movie. True. But you can return it for a small restocking fee of $1.50 within 30 days. However, if you have a credit card on file (don't recommend it because of this) they won't credit the card back, they will credit your bb account. If you don't put a credit card on file the purchase price will be on your bb account.

I wasn't aware of the franchise vs corporate thing. All of the blockbusters (3 of them) near me are participating.

In my defense here, i wasn't planning on keeping the movies for longer than the rental period. I rented them on sunday night with plans to return them on monday night or tuesday morning. However, the commercial caught my eye on monday afternoon and i decided, what the hell, since i hadn't watched one of them i would keep them for another day or two. Who knows, the commercial probably does have some small print that said 'Corporate stores only', but it apparently wasn't big enough since i didnt see it so i didn't think twice.

Also, on tuesday, i was driving past another BB in town and noticed a sign on one of the windows 'NO LATE FEES'. This just reassured me, since i don't live all that close to the one i rented it from, and assumed all BB stores were the same. Hell, i didn't know the stores were split between corporate and franchised locations. They all look the same to me.

Nevertheless, YES this is my fault for making an assumption in which i was utterly incorrect.

I still stand by my ascertation that the ads were and are misleading. As stated earlier in the thread, the average consumer (like myself) has no idea that some of the stores are corporate and some are franchised. My mistake? Yes, but shame on BB.

I would. considering the commercial leads you to belive that it is good at all locations. They should run a fine print at the bottom of the commercial that says something like the fast food commercials "good only at participating locations"

So you were a dumbass and ASSUMED something that happened to be wrong, and somehow Blockbuster is responsible for your dumbassery?

So Blockbuster advertises "no late fees," and he ASSUMES that if he rents a movie at Blockbuster they will not charge him late fees, that makes him a dumbass? Hindsight is 20/20. In hindsight, you're a dumbass. I doubt most people even know that Blockbuster is a franchise. The franchise owner could have easily anticipated that people would rent movies from his store assuming there would be no late fees, he could have posted a sign to avoid confusion.

I'm on the MVP too... I hope Blockbuster doesn't buy Hollywood Video and ruin it. :(

Explain to me how this is even possible

I'd go twice a day some times. (I was on winter break and had nothing else to do)

rent movies, make backup's, return them, rent more. Unless Quasmo is some kind of movie critic who only watches DVD's all day long. :p

Research? Sh1t, just ask the fvcking clerk. They had SIGNS in the store next to my apartment, and I STILL asked just to be sure.

Dammit. Even the informed ones don't know.

HERE IS THE ACTUAL EXPLANATION OF THE POLICY PEOPLE:
If you rent a movie and don't bring it back within 7 days from the due date, you're charged for the movie. If you have a credit card on file, you're charged on there, otherwise, you're charged on your Blockbuster account. If you bring the movie back within 30 days, you're credited back the amount of the sale. The credit will be issued to your Blockbuster account regardless of which method you were charged. However, if your credit card was charged, you can go to the store and request that the credit be applied to your credit card instead of your BB account.

It doesn't say it's only certain stores except for some very small print flashed at the bottom of the screen for .000005 seconds. I was only able to read it one day because I was right in front of the TV. I agree people need to be more informed, but the ad is misleading.

Maybe, but how long does it take to call your local BB and make sure? I ALWAYS assume that strings will be attached when a major corporation advertises something like this.

Agreed....

I don't rent from that craptastic place anyhow...I prefer to rent from the local store and support small business in my community.

:)

yea i dont like BB. we used to have a Easy Video run by a couple nice people in our town for as long as i can remember (moved here in '87). It was inside our local strip mall. I knew the people who worked there and it was nice talking to them about movie suggestions and talking to them about movies and games. They were really lax with fees and stuff and they didnt charge an arm and a leg to rent movies.

Well couple years ago BB corporate (i knoe its a corp store cuz they have the no late fees hanging on their windows now)took out the closest store to the entrance cuz another store was closing out. So even though they charged an arm and a leg, people put up with their nazi policies and went there since BB had the easiest access to the store. People just come in first arrow, park right next to BB, and exit out the 2nd arrow. Meanwhile Easy Video suffered and eventually went out of business.

Moreover, all the employees at BB are all mid-teenagers (even though I am not far removed - Im 23) and they dont know jack about movies. I dunno, the people at EV seemed to know a lot more and it was more fun talking to them. I miss my Easy Video :(

here is an illustration of what Im talkin about

Everything I said was correct. I just didn't notice or mention that you could have them refund it to your CC by explicitly asking them to do so. Anyway, I still don't see the point in giving them your CC. I'd rather have a tab than pay immediately.

They do, it's just so small you can't see it unless you are like a foot from the TV, and it's only on the screen for MAYBE 3 seconds.
