Haull as to the bank after work and the lights on the doors are red so I have to make a cash deposit at the atm. I put in 1100 to cover the rest of my rent and the machine kicks 120 back out so I hit the button to add more cash and then the thing freaks out...

I makes all kinds of fucked up noises for 3 minutes kicks my card back out and says it cant accept cash...SO I put my card in and there is no record of the 980 I just deposited. Then like an idiot I got so pissed I drove off and left my atm card in the machine.

Called customer service and sat on hold for 20 minutes so I could talk to some rep in India that couldn't do a god damn thing.

I guess I have to lave work and go try to straighten this shit out tomorrow I hate fucking banks.

So you go to the bank out of hours, put over a grand into the ATM, and rush off leaving your card in the machine.

How is this their fault at all?

There's usually a limit to the number of bills you can deposit into one of those ATMs in one shot. If you were dropping off 100's you'd be ok, but if that was over a grand in 20's, you might not be.

Hah, the plot thickens.

You can insert up to 30 checks or 50 bills in a single stack. Compare that to the deposit slips and multiple transactions of a conventional ATM.

This is from Chase but I'm sure other banks follow similar rules. 50 20's would be 1000 dollars. If he put in 1100, that's 55 bills. He said it spit 120 out at him, likely because he went over the maximum number of bills allowed to be deposited at once. Yikes.

Wait, you guys have ATM machines that count your deposits on the spot?

My bank needs me to shove them in an envelope and hope no one has sticky fingers when they get around to counting it.

Bank of America is 40 bills at once. You can rinse and repeat until you are done.

It tells you too when you select deposit. I deposit checks a lot because that's how many of my freelance clients pay me. You can deposit up to 10 checks at once.

It counts the cash yeah but 9 time out of 10 it kicks money back out and you have to reinsert it. Some of the atms Key has seem to be perpetually broken and cant accept cash though..

Read it again. It didn't credit 980 bucks.

Dude that's like so 7+ years ago :)

I can take pics of checks via a phone app and have them deposited that way :) Been that way for a couple years. At least a few other major banks have that feature as well.

I find it annoying a bit though. Since I live so near my banks branch I just go there once or twice a week to deposit checks.

Yeah I screwed up once and gave myself like 20,000 instead of 200. Hit the zero a couple times too many. lol

Called the bank when I got home and they said it happens all the time, and they'll just readjust it when they count it manually. Made me wonder how many people try to scam the bank though. Like deposit 100 and punch in 120. Could potentially be missed by an employee half assing their job.

But yeah I would probably not be walking around with a grand of cash on me at night. Even in my city... theft is actually getting pretty bad here. Mostly people breaking into cars and not so much mugging, but I still don't take chances.

Anyone that deposits cash at an ATM gets what they deserve. It just has fail written all over it.

Yeah, I used to deposit my paychecks at my bank's ATM. Always in an envelope with a deposit slip. I'd never think to put cash into an ATM, but I would have thought the procedure would be the same - put it in an envelope and someone later verifies the amount, just like they must verify a check.

But can you take pics of your money and get credit?

Assuming this is a bank ATM and not one of those privately owned ones at some point a bank teller will need to balance the machine. They are opened under dual control meaning that you would need 2 dishonest bank employees operating together to have a chance of cash or checks deposited into an ATM just disappearing. The difference will show between the machine ledger and the actual amount in the depository. Assuming this machine was located at a branch your first step should be to go to that branch when it is open and explain what happened.

For years and years I refused to deposit cash or checks into an ATM. The deposit was delayed at least a day until they got the envelope out and had time to deposit it the normal way. Even worse is if it wasn't owned by the bank, you then have to wait for the bank-to-bank transfer. Plus, the lack of proof made me too nervous that an employee would "lose" some cash. I chose to only use banks with evening and weekend office hours.

But for quite some time, many ATMs now display a photo of your check and tally of your cash and ask you if it is correct. The deposit occurs immediately and you can have the ATM return the cash/checks back into your hands if there was a problem. I'll reluctantly deposit at an ATM now, but it still is just as easy to use the banks office and usually has less of a line than the ATM.

I've always wondered what happens if there is a weird malfunction and money you deposit gets lost or something. I imagine there must be cameras, sensors and stuff inside the machine that records the actual mechanism? The envelope probably gets stamped with an ID or something too.
