But I still question the life time of the work. Sure no sand will get back on the screen but what's stopping the existing sand from falling off and making holes?

I think he sprays some type of clear coat to seal it
 
Wow that is a billion times cooler than the main gallery at the milwaukee museum of art a few months back - that one was just neon lights. They should get this guy's work.
