Edit - Pics of me, but it did get you in here, now didn't it? 😛
I had to take my little brother to the school play he was performing in, so I stuck around. Hey, it's my little brother, it's a nice thing to do, right?
So halfway through, he waves at me. I wave back. The lady sitting next to me (late 20s, I'm guessing) leans over and whispers "Aren't they cute?" Being nice, I reply "Of course ... anyone you're looking for up there?" She points out a boy (her son) and goes on the quick Cliff's Notes "My Kid" spiel ... grade, teacher, latest accomplishment, etc. I give the same in return, not indicating he's my brother because ... well, dammit, I'm 20. I sure as hell don't look old enough to be father to a 6-year-old, so it never crossed my mind.
Friendly chat continues regarding the play, etc, current events. Play concludes. Polite applause from crowd. Stand to leave, mother follows close behind. We're still talking. I'm still clueless.
Go to classroom to pick up the little bro. Son/brother now cheerfully discussing videogames/Pokemon/etc. Mother lets out a sigh at the resemblance (hey, he is my brother) and mentions how tough it is being a single parent. I offer empathy and a pat on the back. She links arms and asks me "well, they're getting along well ... maybe we should set up a date."
Me: (slight double-take) "You mean for them, right?"
Her: (giggles) "Well, that too. I'm sure you wouldn't mind a little company (reaches around with other hand to stroke my arm) either ... single parents don't get out much."
Me: (finally cluing in) "Uh ... I'm sure if I were a single parent I wouldn't, but that's my little brother."
Her: (look of shock sinking in) "Uhhh ... I ... ummm ... I'm sorry."
My little bro did get along with her kid (they already kind of knew each other), so I took her number. No sense in ruining their friendship. But I imagine it's going to be a little awkward if my mother ever invites her over for tea. 😀
