My story....

Being an avid PC gamer, I've never seriously considered that a console could really give me that same "IT" factor. Oh sure, I've played plenty of XboX at a friends house, and farted around with the Wii and PS3 demo units in the store but was never really captured... until now.

Only three weeks ago I finally picked up a PS3. It's one of the newer 80GB models with the 65nm chip and no backwards compatability, etc, etc,. Like many others before me, I bought my PS3 because it was a badass Blu-Ray player and still cheaper than others of similar quality/capability.

Up until I dediced to by a PS3, I was seriously considering building a HTPC w/ a BD drive to house all of my ripped DVD movies and to play back Blu-Ray discs but given the PS3's ability to upscale, stream content from UPnP server, Play BD's, Full HDMI 1.3 support w/ LPCM audio, and it's smooth remote-control friendly user interface, it seemed like a perfect fit for me with a lot less headache/guesswork vs. building an HTPC and getting it right.

Then it happened!

So now that the PS3 has me sucked in with all of it's versatility it threw me for one more sucker-punch I never expected!!! I got curious to see what all the PS3 fuss is about when it comes to gaming... Surely no console could ever go toe to toe with a well-built gaming rig right??.... RIGHT??! So what does my brother do?? He enables me by loaning me his copy of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and that was the beginning of the end...

The next thing I know I've spent an entire Saturday from daylight to dusk gaming my ass off all in 1080p Hi-Def goodness on a 110" screen wrapped up with 1200watts of killer surround sound. It flat blew my mind!! I've never had such an experience with my PC and now I can't see my self going back.. I could no longer give a damn about Farcry 2 or Crysis! Instead I'm finding myself drooling over titles like Dead Space and Resistance 2. I've suddenly ostercised my family and can't stay focues on my job! All I can think about is getting back to my cave and playing that damn PS3 some more!! Talk about "IT" factor?! PS3 has got it! I just wonder how I could have been so obtuse for so long...

PC = Paperweight

The End.

I know the feeling, I bought mine in the spring once the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war was over only as a Blu-Ray player then I rented MLB08: The Show, my first baseball game on a console since the PS1 and from there I was hooked.

Great story, you are now a grown up. 🙂 j/k
Congrats though, imagine the upgrading money you'll save too! You'll love it.

Maybe try hooking up the PC to your home theater?

Yeah, I hadn't planned on buying one, but when popped up this summer for $450 with five games, combined with the fact that HD-DVD lost, I went for it, and haven't regretted it (other than not realizing there was such a dearth of good RPGs, figured it was a sure thing since the PS2 was king there).

I've done it and it worked out OK, but there are just a host of other issues that prevent my gaming rig from lending its self very well to a home theater environment to include fan noise, light spilling out of the Antec 900 case everywhere, no good place to use a KB/Mouse setup, plus the fact that it would take at the very least an Asus Xonar (which I don't have) to approach the same sound quality as the PS3 (HDMI 1.3a / 7ch LPCM).

OTOH, the PS3 is compact, whisper quiet, wireless, un-noticable in a dark room, and packs a nasty punch in the graphics dept. although surfing the net on the PS3 supremely sucks.

And while I could have built an HTPC for the theater, by the time I bought the Blu-Ray drive, an HTPC friendly case, and all the other components involved I would have already been into it for well more than what it cost just to buy the PS3. Nevermind another copy of Vista and whatever other software I would want for video playback on top of it all. Plus, my current rig does a fantastic job of ripping DVDs and hosting them up to the PS3 ala TVersity so it makes for a nice complimentary setup.

When all is said and done, I'll likely continue to game on my PC too. I just didn't expect gaming on the PS3 to be THIS good and I will be spending a good deal of time with it. That said, I'm quite favorably impressed with my *cough* Blu-Ray player *cough* *cough*.

This makes it a lot nicer to surf. Trying to do it with a controller is AWFUL.

Glad you're enjoying your PS3. I like mine, but it hasn't quite captivated me like yours has. OTOH, I only have a 52" TV and no surround sound yet. I do love the Blu-Ray though. Of course, I've really only played God of War (PS2) and some Metal Gear Solid so far.

Uncharted. Must play. Rental, though, took me a lazy Sunday to beat, and there's limited replayability.

I just made the jump myself but I just CANT DO first person shooters on a console. I got in on the Resistance 2 beta and UGH..the controls suck suck suck compared to a mouse and keypad. Once you've played Team Fortress 2 and COD4 on a decent gaming PC, there is no going back to an analog controller...sorry.

PS3 is fantastic for racing games, RPGs, 3rd person action titles...but first person shooters... No.

I feel the same about my 360, and I honestly would hav edumped my PC entirely as a gaming playform, but there is only one tele in the house with nowhere to put another and it jsut gets used to watch too much f'ing tele!

Take last night for example - said was going to hog pc for couple of hours playing dead space. Took a cigarette break after jsut under an hour, and when I got back to the continue it was back on normal tele!

Tonight I am moving my xbox next to my computer, so that I can play the games I ahve for it in peace. It just kind of defeats the purpose of having it cause I will no longer be able to chill on the sofa when playing 🙁

I need a bigger place with a dedicated room!

Yeah, I actually bought it awhile ago, but I wanted to finish God of War first, and now I'm working on Metal Gear. I don't like working on more than one shooter-type game at a time because I get the controls mixed up.

I loaned Uncharted to a friend and he says it's great. I just started Guild Wars (PC) so that's sucking down my time now. I just seem to prefer PC gaming for some reason.
