Yesterday I was downloading FEMLAB....

UGH. I sent this email to the helpdesk to my school (I made some of the items Undisclosed to save myself from further trouble, sorry).

Hi

I'm a student of Undisclosed and I connected to the Undisclosed VPN last night to get FEMLAB for a project that I would be doing.

I transferred over the entire FEMLAB folder (from the Undisclosed folder) to my computer and ran the installer. To my surprise, the splash screen logo for FEMLAB read "To be used only by enrolled students and instructors of the course." I wasn't sure what this meant (does a student have to be enrolled in a FEMLAB course?)

Before continuing to use this any further, I'd like to ask you if what I did was OK.

I just now checked the list of software titles available for student download (Undisclosed URL) but I didn't see FEMLAB in there, but I did see it in the Undisclosed applications directory.

What would be the right course of action here? Should I uninstall this software, or does the license permit me to install this at home?

Thanks for reading.

I hate that feeling that you get in the gut of your stomach when you KNOW you've done something wrong. I completely FORGOT that half the software was available for use only in certain labs at school, and the rest is available for use at home.

Why oh why do I always make stupid decisions? What was worse, downloading the software or sending the email?

I need some consolation from you buddies at ATOT :(. I feel like an idiot now.

Being watched is much better than being kicked out of the school.

You will be watched and monitored 24/7. I'd lose the collection of kiddy pr0n you gots, could get you into hot water....moreso than using software that you're probably allowed to use.

To be honest, the helpdesk people are going to more than likely be lazy fscks and go "Uninstall that plz." and you'll never hear about it again (they may also talk to the netadmin and tell him to stop being a tard and secure things).

... And this is coming from a university helpdesk pilot :p

My course of action would be something like this:

"Hey, Allen, FEMLAB isn't free for distribution, is it?"
<Allen gets a confused look on his face> "No."
"Aight. Hey, Joe, you do realize that anyone can login to the software server, right?"
"They can? Sh!t. I'll have Tommy fix it."

Helpdesks, when staffed by students, are very forgiving entities. The only time they're tough on anybody is when the boss is standing over their shoulder.

You sure this isn't a parody? How could anyone be so paranoid about asking if it is ok to install software?

Not a parody... I would think that collages would bitch out over licencing blah-blah's, but I guess not.
