Dammit...I have the worst luck with Samsung SSD's--new 850 is frozen.

And this isn't the first Samsung SSD that's frozen on me. I've had an 830, an 840 Pro and now my 2 day old 850 Pro all freeze during use. Magician cannot "unfreeze" it and the Samsung CSR says it needs an RMA.

Guess it's going back for replacement.

Anyone ever have such problems with Samsung SSD's? None of the others I own or have owned, almost exclusively Intel, have ever suffered from such crap.

Is this with the same mobo that froze with other Samsungs? Power supply? Maybe try molex to SATA power to them rather than the direct power connector or vice versa. Try running without Magician installed and with or without Intel Rapid Storage installed.

Either there is something inherent in your system as eluded to above, or you're incredibly unlucky. I've owned 3 Samsung's in my personal systems and got nearly 20 deployed in works machines and haven't had a problem with any. I've owned a couple of Intel's which have also been fine and one M500 but I tend to stick with Samsung's.

Freezing is very suggestive of a software problem - it often happens when two programs try to use the same bit of memory or drive space. It creates a data collision, and that results in a system freeze, i.e., crash.

Different systems with each freeze, no other system would unlock. The newest freeze, the 850, was on a fresh install of Win 7. Never exposed to any other OS or info in my new build.

Now, I will say this....every replacement of each Samsung drive, so far, has performed admirably.

I have/had:

240GB Corsair Force 3
250GB amsung EVO 840
250GB Crucial M550
120GB Kingston V300
32GB SanDisk ReadyCache
90GB OCZ Vertex 3

All trouble-free.

Some people are just lucky, I guess. 😀 ()🙂

I had a 830 that went south, then the RMA'ed one was acting up... also had some OCZ units hard lock, and finally, had a toshiba fail on me as well.
(BTW, I really hate how sammy sends you back a refurbished unit... OCZ & Toshiba sent new units for replacement.)

I do know for a fact that every SSD brand out there has had failures, but nobody has hard numbers but the makers, so, it is hard to judge how many people have issues.

I think the main issue is we are running into some kind of corner case where the SSD panic locks, or bad/flaky NAND that deteriorates over time/use, and the controller gets confused, and panic locks.

I know I can rule out pretty much everything else running in the system, since, other than the failing SSDs, it is rock solid in anything you can throw at it.

Have you tried updating the firmware on the drives using the magician software prior to the problems with the drives?

I got mine in a couple of days ago. The first handful of times id boot to windows after enabling RAPID mode, my PC would hard-lock. Then, after an attempt at loading a restore point failed, it hasn't done it since.

I've had a 830 as a boot drive for over a year with no problems and just got a little used PM830 also with no problems.

Got the replacement in yesterday. Thank goodness it was an exchange for new product, not the refurb. that Samsung sends out when you RMA their drives.

New one installed perfectly and appears happy in its new home. No hiccups so far on it, which is pretty par for the course for me and SSD's.

FWIW, I sold my 256GB 830 to a guy on Amazon, and he returned it saying it froze his system (claiming the drive was defective) repeatedly. I refunded his purchase, put it back in my system, where it runs today flawlessly. He was running an Intel system, mine is AMD, so who knows what factors were at play. I am considering an 840 Pro, but the vendor will have to have refund return policy.

I'm probably going to move to Samsung SSDs next month before Haswell-E is released. Thinking of going with four 1TB 840 EVOs in RAID-0 for storage and one 256GB 850 Pro as a system drive.

My nine OCZ Vertex 4 drives have been great. Had a new one die two weeks after buying it when going from six to eight drives in RAID-0. I got it replaced for free. No other problems in the 20 months of use.

Hope you're not in the UK. Seems none of the online shops have the 850 Pro 256GB. I've had one on pre order since 26th July from dabs and it's gone from due august to 5-7 days to another 5-7 days and now it's saying "no confirmed delivery date". Tedious. And none of the other usual suspects have it in stock either.

Yeah, I haven't seen the 850 Pro either, but TBH I'd probably leave it for a bit longer so that we don't find out about some show-stopper bug in it.

Meghan54, do you happen to be using an AMD based system? I considered an Samsung SSD before going with intel from my system. But I read several reviews on Newegg about problems with some of the 830 & 840 with the AMD SB850 southbridge in my machine.

The Micro Center store 15 minutes away from me has six 850 Pro 256GB drives in stock right now.

I have an 840 Pro 256GB with an SB850 south bridge, no problems here (presently or at all).

Ditto on my Asrock mobo with this chipset. I did wonder if the drive I sold that guy was playing nice with his Intel chipset, but when I suggested this, I was accused of being everything short of commie child molester. His retort was basically "My Intel SSD works fine in my system." Ummm, yeah, I would guess so.

I just got Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB a week ago and it froze on me multiple times too, tried different OS, other drives on same system work just fine, swapped cables, updated MB BIOS, same story, it's definitely a SSD issue, sent a request to RMA.
