DAMMIT! I cracked a rib! :(

What I felt last week:

Monday was chest day for me. After doing my flat and incline dumbell sets, I went to do my barbell sets.

I popped 2 plates and a 5 on each side (235 lbs) for my lifts and started my set. I pumped out 7, and went for an 8th rep (which I can normally do)... but failure came sooner than expected.

So I did what I normally do when I reach failure without a spot... I set the bar on my chest gently and called for a spot from some fellows at the bench next to me. As soon as I did, I felt a very painful snap in my chest just to the left of center and just below my pec. I panicked thinking I had broken a rib.

As soon at the bar was up, I stood up and tried to breathe deeply. Wow, I thought... no pain. I felt around the area and pressed on the ribs, and still, no pain.

We have a doctor working out at the gym who does sets with me occationally. I asked him to check it out and he said nothing was broken, but I probably bruised a rib when the bar rolled off one rib and in between two ribs. So I finished my workout with no pain, but feeling a little twinge in that spot the rest of the day.

Yesterday was back day. I do high rows with my chest against a pad for one of my exercises. And I felt a dull pain in my left chest while doing them that only got worse with each rep. Apparently, the bruise is worse than I thought. So I'll not be doing any exercises with my chest against a pad for a few weeks now, I guess.

Anyhow, the moral to this story is: Use a spot when lifting heavy. My chest never complained when I set lower weights on it... but I guess now that I'm up to 235+ lbs on the bench it's not possible anymore.

You cannot imagine the fear I felt when I felt something snap in my chest.

Flash forward to today:

Well, last night, I hurt myself jumping up out of bed. Apparently that rib IS cracked or broken, and motion of jerking myself up out of bed did something to really aggravate it.

Today was chest day, and it was a bit painful. A very light day indeed. But I know there is nothing to be done for a cracked or broken rib except wait it out for as long as 11 weeks.

This sucks. I hope I wont have to stick to light workouts for that long. I'll go heavy when I can and let the pain dictate how far I should go.

USE A SPOT!!!

Update:

Well, I made an appointment with a Dr tomorrow.

I tried to do my back day today, and my chest just got WAY to aggravated to continue... even with light weights. In fact, it started aching so bad, I skipped my cardio too.

Looks like I may be out of the game for 4-8 weeks or longer. DAMMIT!

Update #2: (9/3)

I went to the doctor today and the x-rays shows a small crack in my left rib, fourth (or fifth, I can't remember) from the bottom. He said at least three weeks with no lifting. But he OKed low impact cardio. 🙁

Cliff note:

I cracked a rib last Monday when I was bench pressing without a spotter, and it didn't really hurt until last night/today.

That does suck, bench presses without a spotter are inherently dangerous.

Squats and bench presses, always get a spotter.

About a year or so ago, I was out of the gym with a pinched nerve or something in my upper back/neck area. I couldnt do 2 reps of ANYTHING upper body without getting a blinding headache. I fell way behind in my gym work after not being able to do anything for 2 months.

Well, I do squats in a squat stand that has bars to catch the weight if I can't get back up.

I think I'll start benching in the power rack if I can't get a spot.

Oh yeah, but you still stand a chance of tweaking your back getting stuck down and trying to gently slip a loaded bar off your shoulders.

Switch to the Machines until your Rib heals. You might not make any gains but at least you can maintain your level. The last thing you want to do is mess your back up compensating for an injury.

I hadn't thought of that. The bummer is, most the back machines require me to press my chest against a pad. Trust me, that's painfull right now.

Yeah, maintenence is going to my goal right now. I've had to take two or more weeks off before, and it HURT when I came back (newbie DOMS SUCKS!)

This all sucks, though. I've made some tremendous gains over the last few months. And now I'm going to lose some of that... no matter what I do. 🙁

I already do dumbell presses. But you can't do those alone.

of course you can, what are you talking about.

Well, dumbells are fine, but you can't lift as much.

Example: I workout with 110lb dumbells, but workout with 235-245 lbs on the barbell bench.

And to be honest, it was VERY painful to get the dumbells into position today. I ended up having to lay down and have someone hand them to me, then take them away when I was done. The bench was MUCH easier for me with very little pain. (I padded the bar and used a spot on every set today🙂 )

use a nautlis machine to spot you, i mean thats the last thing u want is to lift heavy weights without a spotter, seems like u learned your lesson

That sucks cracken your rib

I did a number on my back lifting Dumbells in place to press without a spotter. My back has never fully recovered (9 months ago)

Sorry you hurt yourself dude, just be sure to carefully follow the advice of whatever Doc or trainer you've got available to you at your gym.Get well quick.

Trust me, you just can't get the same workout with a machine.

However, you are right. I have learned my lesson. No more benching without a spotter, or if I can't get a spot, no benching outside of a power rack with problerly positioned self spotters.

Damn! That sucks.

When I flat bench, I simply lay back with the DBs on my chest, then rotate them out. I started doing that when I went over 80 pounders. I just couldnt kick them up into position anymore.

GNC has some neat clips for DBs. here:

http://www.gncgear.com/cgi-bin/shop/product.cgi?SKU=PS67250&SessionId=174034394776&OriginalPage=weights

These allow you to clip them onto a benched barbell so you don't have to strain getting them into position. I might pick some up.

yeah? I have an even better story of a rib-hurting.

anyways, one day, I was on the floor reading on a floor with thin carpeting, such that it doesn't really do anything other than give you rugburns. and I was lying prostrate, and apparently, I put too much weight on my right side for too long. at least, this is my theory as to how my rib was hurt, because I started noticing the pain afterwards. however, it could have been when this girl kneed me in pretty much the same spot... (long story. ended up with her apologizing between fits of laughter).

and it hurt a lot, too. couldn't sleep on my right side for about a week, and it hurt when I breathed for about two days. continue reading.

anyways, later that day, I was playing ultimate frisbee (which is NOT a sport, btw... 😉 ), and a frisbee was flying through the air (gosh!). anyways, I jump for it. incidentially, another guy jumps for it too. we collide in midair, I hit his face or something hard with my shoulder, but his knee and my bruised rib have a disagreement about placement, and his knee wins. I spent probably around 45 seconds to one minute on the ground in a fetal position. a good part of it was just enjoying lying down in the sun, but hey. shut up. 😛

the funny part about that is that later I find a footprint centered straight over my crotch. which came from this also. the blinding pain from my ribs outweighed a foot in my crotch? wow.

🙂

nope. no ADD, but I move between different topics quickly in conversation because I've found out what I need to know and move on. its funny, because the other person gets bewildered. 🙂

and I go on tangents, sometimes. I follow them like... uh. a cat... would... follow... catnip.
yeah.

I eventually return to the point, though, you just wait and see.
